The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub - Page 8 Empty The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub

Post by Guest Sun 19 Jun 2011, 9:07 pm

First topic message reminder :

Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.

The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence

So pull up a chair....what'll it be? appletini

Notch, why is it a WUM.

I watched a golf competition where the leader is from Northern Ireland and has a N.I. flag beside his name. I've seen golf competitions where Padraig Harrington has an Irish flag beside his name.

I take that as a sign of rivalry and competition between the two and although I was cheering for McIlroy to me it just isn't quite the same as Harrington winning. Nor is it the same as in GAA or Rugby where they all play under one banner.

Also I am too casual a golf fan to read into things like Golfing Union of Ireland. I obviously believe you that McIlroy has played for Ireland in World Cup and all that but just based on the limited amount of golf I watched thats the opinion I formed.

To me it is perfectly rational and certainly not making me a horrible individual. I'm astounded that the only way you can see my point of view is if you call me a WUM.

The whole World loved Best. Not so much for his self-destruct button. But when he played... man... Everybody smiled. He was very pro ONE team all right. I remember that. We could do with him now to help promote it. Such a shame. Finished at 27.

Imagine him Brady, Giles, Jennings, McGrath and Dougan in the same team?

Ok, I'll stop reminising. Drools, sips tae from saucer and thinks what could have been...

You going to Glastonbury Cari? Ye noveau Welsh hippy ya. I was there years back and it was a mud-bath. The unadulterated fun we had. It was like an English Woodstock.

Gibbo - no! As much as I love U2, I would never go to Glasto now. It's too commercialised and over priced. Yeah, I'll pay about £200 to see feck all from the back of a field. No, why should I when it's on telly in all it's glory Smile

Did you see the doco about festivals at the weekend on the Beeb Gibbo? I thought of you when they showed the early 70s festivals. Didn't care in them days did you? Very Happy

Didn't Best, Giles, O'Neill, Lawrenson et al play an exhibition game against Brazil as a "Shamrock Rovers XI" (but they were really a united Ireland team) and do very well? Maybe even beat them? Gibbo, you're the resident Rovers fan, over to you.

Lovely post by the way, stirring stuff clap

They sure did Mick. I was at it.

Game ended Ireland 3-4 Brazil. We are talking early 70's here. Best ever team then or since. zen

The IFA wanted to stop it, in case it set a precedent. The FAI also had worries. Hence the Shamrock Rovers XI.

Just had a scammer on the phone, pretending to be from some tech support company. Cheek of them.

Asked him if he worked for Microsoft? No, he worked for an "Independent Company". Is that a Private Company? No. Whats the difference between a private company and an independent company? Errr! How did you get these details? Er! Can you provide any proof of your identity or provide any details of your company? Errr!

Barstewards!

I'd love to get a scammer on the phone. I'd waste their time for my own amusement and then give them some colourful abuse.

My colleague got a very funny email scam but didnt want to play along, the gist was that someone in Japan died and they shared the same surname, yerman had no next of kin so this "lawyer" was looking for someone to transfer his fortune to (€27 million no less). Basically all he had to do was set up an offshore account in a Spanish bank (at the tidy sum of €1200) and the millions would be his.

I'd love to string Yerman along and get him to do some ridiculous
Stuff for the Craic...

To be honest, that's exactly what I thought this was. I thought this was his fiendish WUM masterplan in action. I thought he had got us all.

I respect your views, if you're out there Stag, I just don't understand them. After all at the end of the day, whatever happens between North and South; we are all Irish. I went looking for the goals and I just found this.

Giles and Dougan were great mates and had a vision.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shamrock_Rovers_XI_vs_Brazil

They kicked the whole idea off. Huge respect for them after that.Even more than I had before. Right in the middle of the Troubles.. they did that. Visionaries both. Didnt know that till now.

Just have to say this. When ever I see an Irishman, Irishwoman or a combined Irish team, play sport at the highest level and succeed, I don't see flags. Felt the exact same way about Mary Peters, when she on Olympic Gold. Was so proud of her. Felt the same way about Barry McGuigan, when he became World Boxing Champ. Felt the same way, when Alex Higgins won the World snooker Championship for the 2nd time.

Felt the same way when Ken Doherty and Dennis Taylor won theirs. Exact same feeling. When Sonia and Eamon ran the legs off the rest of the world. When Stephen Roach and Sean Kelly were at the top of World bike-racing. When we won the SLAM - together. All magic moments for me as a Paddy.

Felt the same way, when I saw the magic of George Best, Liam Brady, Paul McGrath and Mike Gibson play soccer and rugby and light up a pitch. And I was so proud of OUR Rory last night. We are far too small, Globally-insignificant and interwoven as a race - to be anyway divisive now. Specially in the 21st century. Time to really use sport to do that and show the politicos the way forward. Together. Openly supporting and openly backing - each others sporting stars, will only help to improve that, over time.

Forget the flags. All these people are Irish and Irish sport and the country as an entity, has benefitted from every one of them in so many ways, over the years. It helps to bind us together and lift us - under one cause. That, is an indisputable fact whenever you see rugby at Lansdowne. And that's what really matters here.

I mean, look at us lot. 35 years ago it would not have been the done thing for me to be shown the beauty and warmth of Northern Ireland by great people like MrsP, Rava and Notch and Scotty. Micky T, Stag, Mickado, Huggie, et all - also. Wearing Leinster shirts. And actually surviving the trip.

The younger Irish regs may find this hard to understand now and take it all for granted. But believe me, it's true. I was at a soccer match with my Da, at Winsdor Park - in the 70's and we had to be escorted to our trains for safety. I just remember being scared shiitless as a kid. The hatred was palpable. No way we could have stopped off at a bar and had the best craic ever. All that is near gone now.And sport did its bit.

How far we have come in a brief time - for me anyway.

I feel really strongly about this. Ive seen and experienced too much divisive shoite over the years, for me not to be. Id expect the edcuated young Irish people - especially, to understand that and help it grow more. Forget the flags and see the person. Even is he does play for GB in the Olympics. I dont care. Why shouldn't he? Because that person is Northern Irish. Body and soul. He will also play for Ireland in golf and hopefully, we'll win another Golf World Cup.

If he was from Munster, you can bet we would have seen a few Munster flags flown. Same with Leinster. And I have to include Connacht, or Ummm, will sign on and have me... Forget the flags. They can either be divisive, or just used to show what province you come from - with pride..

Gibbo rant over.

Believe.

Gibbo OK OK OK OK (a thousand times)

All I can say is I wish I could have met you at that Windsor game in the 70's I would have looked after you and yer da. Nae bother!!

Anyone watching the tennis? When I heard there was a rain delay, I thought brill there's tonight's entertainment sorted. Murray making mincemeat of this guy, 10 games on the bounce.

Ah Willy, had we not let Munster win that, where would be the interest for them to come back next season? In fairness.

Big picture stuff man. And Big Cups. laughing

Murray could really have a go at Wimbledon this year. I fancy The Fed to get there too.

But some geezer called Nadal may feic that one up.

They kicked the whole idea off. Huge respect for them after that.Even more than I had before. Right in the middle of the Troubles.. they did that. Visionaries both. Didnt know that till now.

Brilliant, just absolutely wonderful. You know Gibbo, the way soccer is on this island it's turned me off the whole sport. The corrupt and arrogant FIFA have as well, as has the soulless pursuit of money and the arrogance of the millionaire players but ore than anything it's the fact that soccer on this island is more divisive than anything else. Stag and Munsty had a real go at me once in the old pub when I put my foot in mouth (as per usual) but it's true. It's so sad.

Think where we could be if the eejits in both associations put their differences aside and worked together. But people are happier for us to fail apart than succeed together Crying or Very sad

I'm gonna have to be careful my passion doesn't make me say something stupid or put my foot in my mouth somehow atm. Careful Notch, take it handy... Smile

I ended up saying something like, don't call here again and he was saying "What can you do? What can you do if I call again?" I gave him a choice word or two and hung up.

I should have said "Well, if ye want to chat we'll chat. How about you bark like a dog and I'll think about giving you the first digit of my bank account number" Wink

Life is full of missed opportunities. This guy... was a Kumquat. Really nasty piece of work, and got very nasty once he was rumbled.

Ah so I did Robbo had forgotten about that. No this wasn't it that master plan is still in the works. Notch no probs but there was a few minutes there I didn't feel respected at all. I felt as though the pub was basically saying "no your wrong. you must be a horrible person who wants to create north v south hostility". There were only so many times I could say the same thing.

Yeah, look I'm sorry man. I really didn't mean that. I have a great talent for offending people. It's a gift. It's a great gift. I should have a radio show where I slag eveything off, and people hate me- I'll be rich. I'll be the Nordie George Hook.

I thought you were at very least playing it up a little bit. We didn't mean any harm. It's just... being all rugby fans, all passionate Irish rugby fans, many of us have Irish sporting heroes from different sides of the border. For example, I would have a lot of admiration for Paul O'Connell. And Padraig Harrington. Roy Keane I feel sometimes a great admiration for, sometimes a certain frustration. I don't know what to make of the guy.

But whats a border? What's a passport or a flag? Not as important as people eh? Ale
