First topic message reminder :

Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.

The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence

So pull up a chair....what'll it be? appletini

Ah the Slippery-slip! Love it!

Do you know they've had to change some of the names though?

I don't think Moon-Face is allowed to be called that anymore due to it being non pc. They've also had to change one of the childrens names to Franny.

I hate they they change things like that.

Best 606 conversation ever.
Seriously, I used to LOVE those books as a child. Makes me want to read them again! Very Happy

I don't agree with all the changes they made - they did go to the extreme. To be fair though, Fanny is a name we rarely hear these days unless it's in the rude capacity.

Exactly, they're of their time. Once you start revising things like that, where do you stop?

I know they got rid of golliwogs from the Noddy stories, but they changed them to monkeys. Isn't that almost worse?

I know, but how difficult is it to explain to a child that it's a name that used to be popular?

It's just...I don't know whether it's from a writers perspective, it's just the fact that years after you've died people can go in and change your words and work...it just doesn't sit well with me. I personally just don't think that a lot of it's necessary Smile (so I guess we agree! Wink )

Once the book reads well I don't mind. If its case that it detracts from the book - change it.

Dreamer - maybe society's gone too far for a child - and even their parents to see that word as the name that it once was, and they just see it for what it means now?

Penfro - you made a very wise choice last night my friend Smile

I remember reading that one school changed the nursery rhyme to 'Baa baa rainbow sheep.' That's just ridiculous, it's not as if the song slags off the black sheep anyway so why change it? At least black sheep exist!

Sorry Penfro, that comment is dangerously independent. I mean, don't you realise that your opinions are mere reflections of the English Hegemony such that they deign to allow you to have. Don't think that as a Welshman you are capable of thoughts independent thereof.

well according to wikipedia the only thing they've changed are the children's names.

They are now Joe (instead of Jo), Beth (not Bessie) and Frannie (not Fanny).

Okay Joe I can understand a bit, but what was wrong with Bessie!?

Cari - yeah, I guess so, I just hate books being tampered with I think.

Dreamer - now that IS odd. what's wrong with Jo and Bessie? How strange...!

I can see what you mean about works being tampered with...it's like when you listen to a song on the radio and they blank out a lyric because it's remotely rude like "ass" Rolling Eyes It just makes the singer sound like they have a stutter.

Who authorised those changes? If it was Enid Blyton's descendents, they should have told them to go and whistle.

There's un-PC stuff in a lot of literature, only because people's views have changed over time. You have to appreciate the milieu in which a work of literature was written.

Milieu!

I don't think it was an attempt to make them "PC" so much with Enid Blyton books, I think it was somebody's efforts to modernise them, and thus make them appealing for kids today. I haven't read any modern kids books though, so I don't know...

But I will rarely buy them or go for them.

That's so strange that if you love them you don't look for more in that genre. I don't buy books often (I have to ration myself!) but when I do it's usually always sci-fi/fantasy.

Otherwise I stick to re-reading some series. The Belgariad and The Mallorean by David Eddings are two of my favourites Smile

I've re-read the Belgariad & Mallorean over the last couple of weeks - 10 books, not bad Smile - I managed to get Kindle editions of both series, as my paper versions are in boxes 12,000 miles from here.

I sat next to a woman on the train this morning who was reading The Hidden City (from the Tamuli) series too - must look out for ebook versions of that set (my ex read the Elenium/Tamuli series before the Belgariad/Mallorean and we used to have the odd debate over which was better - we both preferred the one we'd read first). I do wish I'd never read the Rivan Codex though - learning how Eddings planned out the books took away some of the magic. And there's even a poster down on the Motorsport board with the username "Belgarion of Riva" - very cool. In an awfully geeky kind of way Wink

And I loved reading Blyton growing up - I inherited a lot of children's books that Dad and my Aunt had had in the 50s/60s so got to read them in the original.

Oh no, to dance beside or even within eyeshot of Micky (the moves) T, one must go through rigorous training for many many years. If Hughie had tried to copy the MixMaster on the dance floor he could have contracted skin failure. I’ve seen it happen before, not pretty.
