The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I remember when we went out second time it was to watch a soccer match in the bar. I remember the barman telling me I was lucky to found a girl who likes soccer. I said loudly enough for him (and her) to hear "Yea but I'm a rugby fan"
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Mickado - that sounds cool. Not sure I've heard of that one, but Dempsey's (the best pub in the Diff) do an Indie night called Twisted by Design. There's a couple of other venues for live bands and stuff. Then there's Metros which is (or was?) more of a rock club. I haven't been there for donkeys..

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Actually did I tell you what they said to me when I interviewed for my place. They said one of my great qualities is that on paper I read like a "nerd" - a referee, worked in a bookshop, studied law, good grades, starting a new degree in literature etc - but that when you meet me face to face you can see I can have sense of humour, or I'd be good craic to have a few pints with etc.
Am I that geeky or nerdish??

Morning all, I can't remember how may eggs were in that full English brekkie at Paddington station at the start of HEC weekend, but and I believe Asbo had a beer instead of a coffee, but it was close to the "Asbo Special"

I wish I could bake. Actually it's just as well I don't...I'd be HUGE from all the cakes I'd eat. My brother makes brilliant fairy cakes and to look at him you wouldn't think so - he's a rocker.

Cari - I bake but I don't think I'm all that good at it, getting better though (although I still need lots of practice!). Brought a victoria sponge cake into work last week which everyone said was yummy, but I couldn't figure out if they were just being polite or not

Bore da pawb / good morning all. It's been a busy start to the day but enjoyably so. It's a cracker of a day outside to boot
I couldn't agree more that Richard 'Sycophant Total Wipeout-ruiner' Hammond was totally the wrong choice for this programme. The BBC's attempt to justify it by getting him to call it 'the earth machine' is so tenuous a link it's untrue. If not that Scottish Coast bloke, there's another great Scottish presenter who's already done a similar series for the BBC -and he's a GEOLOGIST. But no, Hammond gets the gig.
It could have been worse, I suppose. They could have had Nick Knowles presenting it.

But this 2nd-hand car salesman?! Hammond. Dont think so.

I don't do it half as much as I should Swanny, the cake I baked last week was the first one I'd done in months!
Think I'm going to try a chocolate one for my next one, or I might be brave and try and bake a carrot cake. Decisions, decisions....

Dreamer, thanks so much for the title for that book. I'm gonna get it at the weekend!! Really excited about it. Haven't read fantasy series in years.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
No problem Stag. I really hope you like it! I seriously couldn't put it down, but then I love all things fantasy so that's perhaps not so unusual for me with a book

If you do decide on carrot cake Dreamer let me know. I have a recipe I've used many times and is delicious and pretty simple. I could email it to you.

Dreamer when I read fantasy or adventure books I get the same. But I have some hangup about them. I never ever read them.
Read the Ghengis Khan series, Sword of Truth series, Dark Materials, Harry Potter, the Magician, Hobbit and LOTR etc and loved them all.
But I will rarely buy them or go for them.

I think Hammond has been ok actually. Good point on that coast guy, who is actually a archeologist and not a gelologist but I can see why the BBC would have went for Hammond to try and appeal to a more mainstream audience.

Luckless / Gibbo – I adore BBC shows about the sea, but I might have to give that one a miss, Hammond is a bad choice!

That's so strange that if you love them you don't look for more in that genre. I don't buy books often (I have to ration myself!) but when I do it's usually always sci-fi/fantasy.
Otherwise I stick to re-reading some series. The Belgariad and The Mallorean by David Eddings are two of my favourites

I know Dreamer its weird. And growing up I lived off that stuff. Enid Blyton was probably my favourite author as a kiddie.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I don't know his name Asbo, but he presented a series about the earth for the BBC a few years ago. He had that knack of explaining complicated things in an easily-understood way and it was an excellent series.
On books, I started The Idiot by Dostoyevsky last night. I began reading it in 2007 and only got so far (page 223 to be precise, so I'll know when I'm breaking new ground). I've started to think which books to take on holiday in September too.

Ah the Slippery-slip! Love it!
Do you know they've had to change some of the names though?
I don't think Moon-Face is allowed to be called that anymore due to it being non pc. They've also had to change one of the childrens names to Franny.
I hate they they change things like that.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I can't see what's wrong with Moon-Face! Have they changed Big Ears from the Noddy books too?
The best bit about the Faraway Tree was that there would be a different land at the top every time. Your imagination could run wild with those.

That's nerd with a T
I think they had to adjust quite a few Enid Blyton books considering the time in which she wrote them. Some of the stuff in them would be inappropriate today.

I'm not sure why they had to change the names though. I hate that they tamper with them, that's how they were written in the time, not sure why they can't be read as such.
