The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Is school there to prepare you for university?
Shouldn't be IMO.
I think school should give you the tools to go on and do whatever it is you want to do in your adult life, and for some students thats going to involve further study. Could involve getting a job out of school or an apprenticeship, or even something left field like starting your own business if you are particularly mature and well motivated, but some people are going to want to go to University.
I always hear that first year undergraduates lack basic skills in things like writing essays, critical thinking, independent study etc. These are obviously essential for a degree but they're important skills for a lot of jobs out there as well. There's a culture of spoon feeding which is detrimental to 'real' education (note; not targeted exam results).

Actually I don't think it was more difficult because I'd matured a bit, in a more relaxed environment, can study what I like and can work on my own terms. At school you're pretty much lumbered.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
The result I was most unhappy with was English. My second guessing the exam and being just a tad arrogant cost me a grade. Did a fantastic mocks paper getting an A1. Only studied 4 of 8 poets. The other 4 came up and I had to skip poetry section. Ended up with a B.
However I didn't care all that much. There were other subjects that I got A's in that I didn't expect to.
Swings and roundabouts.

Yeah... but I never studied that hard to be honest. I was more annoyed with myself because I knew I could have done the clean sweep if I had actually worked more.

French actor Gerard Depardieu has been removed from a flight bound for Dublin.
The 62-year-old, star of Cyrano de Bergerac and Green Card, was on a flight from Paris when he urinated in front of fellow passengers.

Now why does that not surprise me

He does seem to enjoy flashing his bits around and not just on screen either.
He is the Oliver Reed type of character he thinks after the event.

In 1968 I failed Use of English. A sort of unprepared semi-demi A-level akin to General Studies. Maybe they were right.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
My English grade annoyed me the most as well Stag. I really wanted an A in that and I was all set for it if I didn't make any mistakes in any of the remaining exams, I did make a mistake though (curse you Emily Dickinson!) so ended up with a B. But that meant I went to Aberyswyth Uni instead of Cardiff though, so worked out all for the best for me
So almost my lunch time, going to walk up town to the farmers market again, can't wait (plus I'm just really hungry)

I've heard that undergraduates' standard of written English is often shockingly bad. The only conclusion I can come to is that it's possible to pass English (and other exams) despite having terrible English. That shouldn't be.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
My neice, the one who just got her A Level results, is very good at English. Top of her class and her teachers had no doubt she would get an A in her AS last year. The exams went well. Results arrive and she has a C in English.
Closer examination showed that one essay paper had scored a D.
Her teachers were shocked to say the least and asked for a remark.
Same essay, different examiner comes back with an A!
How can there be that much variation in marking?

Portnoy, did you mention the playoffs in the exam??
English is a tough one to call. I remember I wrote an essay about rugby in my leaving cert exam actually. It was about the fickleness of popularity amongst peers and fans in teenage sport.
Rugby can fit in anywhere

CARI - you kept that quiet That is brilliant. I know things aren't great at the moment, but look back on that as an inspiration to yourself as to what you can achieve
STAG - now, see, what do actually mean by not fail ? Did you always get A-C , or do you mean 'sneeking' by with a D or a an E
I'll stand up for the "Thickies' . Never failed a thing until I got to Grammar School (That's proper schooling for you youngsters, not this one size fits all Comprehensive bollix. Academic = Grammar. Vocational = Secondary Modern). Anyway, at GCSE O'Levels I failed French (Those who went to the 1st time would have seen evidence of this ). At ONC I failed my Statistics exam in my first year and had to re-sit the WHOLE year, not just the Stats module, although I would have "passed" these days as I had 42%. HNC was a breeze mind you

Not very large really but just not that hungry. Still got a Song of Ice and Fire a few sambos and some fruit. Nice old lunchtime.
And I've just made my first call to a rugby club explaining who we are and what we do. After 15 minutes they have agreed to take SEVENTY people on tour with us!!! Thats double the size of most tours.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Penfro,
I suspect it used to be assumed that those who stayed on to take A Levels were the select elite who were more than capable of handling the work required at A Level so the pass rate would be vey high.
I suppose it's like that in most Uni courses were the vast majority are expected to pass.
