The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

I mean the age at which education starts. The way things are taught. The way things are tested.
That's referring to nature.

How is that nature. You are talking the influence the education system has on people.

Not in your opinion. Bruce Springstein isn't a great singer or dancer but writes damn good songs that suit his voice and Bieber sings songs that people really like. I think it's very unfair to call him a plank because it annoys you that he is famous for what you perceive as a lack of talent.

Munsty,Bieber uses Auto-tune a lot,Springsteen and Dylan who aren't great singers don't. I've said it before I have nothing against the guy, a plank was admittedly a bit strong I just don't think he is talented.

No, it's the age where education starts which favours female nature. The way things are taught refers to it being more geared to girls due to their nature.
Even MrsP says that she is talking about nature with it being exaggerated by nurture. You said you were on her side but you're not as you believe only in nurture.

Talented in what sense? Talented at singing? Maybe not to the same level as some but he is. Talented at selling music? Probably one of the best.

I agree with you. Suits his music to a tee and I am a big fan. Just taking to task Thomond's allegation that Bieber is not a great singer and if he's judging Bieber by that yardstick, Springstein is not a great singer by any classic standard.
I love his singing voice though.

OLD-FOGEY ALERT - well when I were a lad (working 25 hours a day down't pit, tell that t' kids t'day and the won't blydi believe yer !!)) E was NOT a pass. C, or above, was a pass. D, E and U were FAILS. Does that statement mean 97.8% got C and above ? I don't think so I guess this is another symptom of the 'delayed success' cultureluckless_pedestrian wrote:Penfro, I saw your post but I didn't know what you were getting at!

The pass rate rose for the 29th consecutive year,,,,,with at least 97.8 achieving at least a E
So it's basically telling you that the pass rate was higher and the overall results were better than last year

I think an E is a pass because you only need 40% to get an E, anything below that is a fail though.

An E still gives you points and these days a D is considerd a pass.

To be fair, 40% is generally a pass in most things. However, is too easy to get 90%+ in school when compared to University. I found the work I did in secondary school wasn't sufficiently challenging to prepare for University except in the case of some of Advanced English.

Sorry for ignoring you Penfro.
Even in my day, which was QUITE a few years ago, an E was a pass at A Level. Only F was a fail. I don't think we had 'U' at A Level.
At O Level, yes I am THAT old, it was just ABC that were passes.

I don't think you can get an F grade anymore, after E you go straight to U. Something like that anyway.

I suppose, if you think about it, the grades are just used to divide up the marks. They could call passing marks John, Paul, George and Ringo if they wanted.
It's just that you are used to thinking of only A-C being passing grades.

Penfro - I believe the E and D grades may have been brought in as passes to allow student who perhaps aren't capable of getting the A-C grades to gain enough points to continue their education and provide themselves with more prospects for their future.
That's how I see it anyway, don't profess to have any real knowledge of the grading system at all!

Not really Stag. I was 16 when I got me only ever "fail" on an exam (I got an E ), but I'd missed over 3 months of school and had had to teach myself the module. Re-sat it and got 90% which made me feel a lot better
If not for that blip, I'd not have failed any either.

I have. I failed Biology A level. I started sixth form studying English, History and Welsh, but there were only two other pupils studying Welsh, both of whose first language was Welsh, plus the teacher laughed at me once because of the answer I gave to a question, so I dropped it and went to biology instead. By my second year I knew I wasn't going to do that well so I put all my academic eggs in the English and History baskets.

I falied all my GCSEs when I was 16, but I mitched off school all the time because I was bullied. Went back into higher education when I was 22 and passed my exams...went to university and got a degree to boot.

That's brilliant Cari!
Notch - I was upset with the B's I got at my A and AS levels, even though I know it's a bit stupid, I did really well to even get them considering how much school I missed. I just used to really like getting A's. Reckon I'm a bit of a geek too
