The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Lionel Nallet photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Flood came on with 11 minutes of the game still to go, replacing Mike Catt. Not quite sure how it was his game ?

So it was not the game he scored a try and kicked a few penalties then ? he went off injured in the second half.

I went from Rugby where we did 20,40 and 60 metre sprints straight to a soccer game. Not my smartest move ever!

No. The only try in the RWC 2007 semi final between England and France was scored by Josh Lewsey after French full back Damien Traille let the ball bounce.

I take it you haven't read Hosea Gear's comments about being left out of NZ's squad. Not guaranteed to take off somewhere else, but money seems to be uppermost in his thoughts atm. See planet rugby - sorry but as a 'newbie' I'm not allowed to post links.

A newbie? I thought you had way more posts than 13!
Anyway, the footballer making those comments was a millionaire. Rugby players in New Zealand earn a good crust, bottom of the ladder Super Rugby player would be earning a fair bit more than the average salary in NZ, but when you consider that it's a career that will leave you high and dry and looking for something else once you hit your mid 30s I understand why money is an issue for those with young families. Gear is probably making a good bit more because he's an All Black but he may only have a few years of that and won't have made all that much as a junior player.
More than anything, I think he is just disappointed in missing out and I think he wants a fresh start somewhere else. Doesn't seem to be any question he would feel differently had he made the cut.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Willy - Conway was the other Ulster winger I was trying to think of, but my mate had tempted me to try a 6.1% beer when I posted
Thomond - correct. I had to start from scratch after my phone went phut about a week ago.
Notch, I was just making a comparison with football, and that money does matter. But I agree that in many circumstances rugby players don't have the financial security that playing just one season in a Premiership footy team would bring.
And, as I'm responding to you Irish lads (plus reading back on the scrum half comments), I don't think any of your current crop of 9s would make any of the other 6N squads bar Italy's.
Possibly controversial, but I did run that by a couple of Irish mates over the weekend. When they thought it over, and considered the 9s that Scotland, France, Wales and England have in their squads, they agreed with me.
Perhaps that's worth an article, but I can't be @rsed to post it right now.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Yeah, I agree with you regarding the scrum-halfs. I think young Conor Murray will develop into a very good player but he's proved nothing yet and is completely untested. Boss- we haven't really seen what he can offer. I'm backing him to play well if he gets the chance, Reddan is the best but is nothing special.
France are miles ahead of everybody! Parra would walk into anyones team and Yachvilli is hardly a bad back-up. Then Scotland with Cusiter/Blair/Lawson/Laidlaw, England have Youngs- I might have to say, with Care being injured, I would rate Reddan higher than Wigglesworth but not by much.
It's certainly a weakness. The fact Kidney has included two nines who barely had any meaningful gametime in test rugby recently says a lot. The fact all the Irish fans agree with his decision says even more!

Morning all.
Missing the RWC squad would mean that Gear would stop being rated (and paid) as an AB come the new year - effectively halving his salary - a good SXV player in NZ probably earns around £80-90k*, an ABs contract on top would get £150k+, with McCaw & Carter on nearly double that (plus endorsements).
*Back in 1999 or so I chatted to Norm Maxwell in a bar (pre ABs capping) and he said (my mate outright asked him!) he was on $110k then - around £55k at today's exchange rate.

Kiwi - that was a bit tongue in cheek last night (see comments about beer).
The SXV money isn't bad if stuff costs the same in $NZ there as it does in £ here.
With an average squad of 35 here the mean wage is about £120k. Obvously for every player we pay £250k, two more will have to be on about £60 to stay within the cap.
