Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the David Wallace photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

I'm sorry to hear that, Chef. My dad's (old) cat died last week - she'd been fine but deteriorated within a couple of days.

Wow, quiet in here.
Just read back and seen the news about Wallace. Really bad news for him, Ireland and Munster who could do with him to get their HC mojo back.

Hiya Cari. Doing OK considering , how about you?
Are you reasonably happy with Wales going into the RWC? I would be if I were you. I expect Wales to play with much more 'shape' and patience against the likes of Fiji and Samoa, rather than take them on in an unstructured contest like last time

I'm good thanks Have been off work since Friday and I'm not back in until Thursday. It's pay day tomorrow too. August felt like a loooong month!
Yeah I'm happy with Wales at the moment considering...I hope we can just have a better time than four years ago. I'd really like them to win the Fiji match just to bury that forever if nothing else.

Samoa will cause you more problems imo. Astute kicks through and over their defensive line is not a bad way to keep the pressure on them. It might avoid some mighty tackle collisions in what will be the most physical pool.
We had a good yack with a Welsh lad in the pub in Henley before Wasps' friendly on Saturday. We all wished each other good luck for the Cup; nice to see
And good luck with that redeployment stuff. Not nice after putting in so many years in the job

just popping in for a quick
Can't seem to find the time to get in here at the moment, just completely addicted to either playing on the Wii or reading my books. Plus can't get on here during the day anymore.
No doubt things will pick up once the rugby starts properly on Friday.
Hope everyone's well anyway
Cari - agree with you completely about teh Fiji game.

Harrow - awh that's nice you and the Welsh lad could have a friendly natter...unlike this place sometimes! I don't think we'll win our group, but I just hope it's much better than last time and we can look back and say we had a good tournament considering.

Cari - my body is not going to thank me for it tomorrow I can tell you! My abs and triceps are already starting to get a dull ache in them, which means I'll be in a fair bit of pain come the morrow. Ah well, tis all good I guess.
Just reading that Nick Reynolds injured his ankle playing against Exeter and will be out for a few weeks, so the Scarlets are another back down! Worrying times in our backline, seriously concerning me now.

Dreamer - forgive me if I sound rude but you don't need to do that much exercise, I thought you meant you were playing an energetic game! You might want to give it a miss for a day or two.
Shame about the injury to Nick Reynolds. I think the O's should be all right starting the Rab...fingers crossed.
Oh maaan...I shouldn't be watching the Great British Bake Off when I'm starving.

nah you don't sound rude at all!
I'm only doing a half hour Cari of mainly Yoga stuff for my back, shows how un conditioned I am if I'm already hurting from it.
I'm not doing it to lose weight or anything, just to get fit, coz I'm really not at the moment.
Trust me I am mainly playing the games! The snowball one if my latest challenge. I can't for the life of me beat my sister's record at the moment, tis really starting to annoy me! She's giving me until Christmas, but I'm not too hopeful

Oh I see. I forgot they do Yoga on there. That's a good way to keep fit...if you can do it. I'm not very...eh...flexible.
I've only had a go once on a Wii at Christmas when my sister brought hers. It was a good laugh. I think it's more fun with two or more people playing games.

I made a list of all the fixtures I'm going to watch this coming season apart from the cups obviously.
So next week I'm going to be busy sorting out tickets and booking hotels for the games that require a overnight stay.
Book well in advance you can get brilliant deals with the hotels £19 a night in the Travelodge's

Sorry, I was on my way home there Cari. I don't care where people come from so long as they don't pee me off. I think most people are like that tbh. I try to see positive stuff and the rugby is a great common bond for real fans. The Welsh guy in question was the same.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Simon, I would suggest the real ales as follows:-
While I don't have a personal problem with London Pride (it being the beer served at Wasps' old ground), I would go for Banks & Taylor Dragonslayer for the St. George connection.
For Wales it has to be Brains' Bread of Heaven.
For Scotland I would suggest Orkney Skullsplitter (reminiscent of a Saturday night in Glasgae )
You'll not get the Irish away from Guinness I suspect, but something from Porterhouse, and Hilden Ale for the N.I. contingent.
Whakatu (albeit brewed by Everards in Leics.) for the Kiwis.
Coopers Sparkling Ale for the Aussies.
And Zulu Blonde from Eshowe in Kwa-Zulu Natal for the South African contingent.
Yup, I know it's more than 4, but we're 'gonna need a bigger boat' when it all kicks off on Friday week

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Hello all, I don't post too often and am prob doing now cause am fecin peeshed, but not to worry. I used to follow the oul pub on original 606 and found this in last few months.
Have to say am fairly worried about Ireland's performances and have been for about 2 years, still have a little faith that things can be sorted and we can have odd big game to cause odd upset. Prob won't happen but when I was growing up watching Ireland I watched a team worse than this take Australia's World Cup winning team to the wire in 1991. Thing is tho back then we showed a passion that raised de hairs on de back of me neck. We have shown that odd time in more recent times but not as much as I'd like.
What I would say tho is that in 2007 I was full of hope and confidence I guess I thought that we would have a good world cup. Opposite happened and don't think I have been as depressed as that since- well except for last cpl of six nations. Point is I am no longer expecting as much as I was from this World Cup which is prob a good thing mmmh not sure what point I was buildin up to there!

Irish expectations were on a high back in March, but have nosedived during the warm up games. I think your players, rather than the coaching staff (and what happened to "In Deccie we trust?"), need to take on a bit more responsibility.
It's the last tilt for a fair few of them, so you would think they would be up for it.

I think they will. No way will O'Driscoll or O'Connell tolerate a repeat of 2007. There's also bound to be a much better spirit in the camp than Eddies regime of untouchables and dirt trackers with it's very clear divide. We weren't as good as fans were making us out to be after the England game and we're not as bad as being made out to be now.
We were beyond dire against England though. A disastrous performance. I think we're overreacting to one game again. Just like we did when we ruined the English Slam.
A brave defeat against Australia, a scrappy win against Italy and a dignified yet disappointing quarter-final exit beckons.

Have to disagree man, Irish expectations haven't been high for at least a year, prob more, at least mine haven't when looking at performances. I was worried during 6 nations 2010 and six nations 2011. Don't get me wrong, I still believe if we play to our ability we can do well but our performances in last cpl of years really does not point in that direction. More often than not in last cpl of years I have been frustrated with Irish performances. Few match performances have given me confidence. Many have deflated me to be fair.

Nottins to be honest I think that's fair enough. The English 6n match is our benchmark. That's how we can and should be playing. It shouldn't be seen as a one off, not with the players we have at our disposal.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
It was a one off for Ireland though this year.
Notch, there were plenty of WUM comments by you and your fellow Ireland supporters stating that Ireland would easily get out of the group stages due to their results this year. Asbo was one who questioned this belief and was shot down in flames. Four defeats later and you have to ask how Ireland are on the up, as was stated by several of you previously.
Poopie, I'm talking rugby in here, bound to get castigated for that by someone soon

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Notch, trust me, English fans were thinking the same in 2007 (a q/f at best). That's why I reckon the players have to take things by the scruff of the neck. Something isn't working with the whole group atm, and the players are best placed to put that right.
nottins, there's plenty of English fans who have heightened expectations after Saturday.
And honeymonster, I was specifically commenting on an exceptional Grand Slam derailing petformance from Ireland last March as the reason for Irish hope in this tournament. If you could read back on some of the posts on the old 606 at the time you would see what I mean. I took that game as a compliment that beating England meant so much to Ireland on the day.
Anyhow, that's enough from me.
Bon soir.

I still think we'll get out of the group though. I'm not sure how you think we shot anyone down in flames? I think the worst sin that has been committed here was optimism. You're not seriously annoyed about a group of fans being optimistic about their teams chances? You must hate the Welsh if that bothers you!
On a serious note, I've never posted a WUM comment in this pub. I'm a bit worried that you've misinterpreted comments made by rugby fans supporting their team as WUM comments. It's just a game mun. Talking your side up is all part of the fun. Being optimistic is all part of the fun. The swing form elation to despair without ever once realising the truth lies somewhere in the middle is all part of the fun. Would you ever relax?
Hound, I feel the same way regarding where we are now and were England were in 2007. I don't think we'll do as well as England did in 2007, maybe not even justify that parallel, but I think that example is the ultimate example of how a team can turn it around in a World Cup. Your form and previous results completely go out the window once the group stages are over. Once we get past Italy this won't matter- if we get past Italy.
Difference between now and 2007? I think we have an easy draw, aside from Australia of course. If we had a Tonga, Samoa, Fiji or Scotland in our group there would be serious cause for concern. Italy will be tough but beatable.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Notch, I never said you posted WUM comments in here. There was a thread outside of "the pub" that had plenty of WUM comments about Irelands chances. My exact memory of those people who made those comments may be slightly impaired by some of the fermented grapes I've partaken of tonight
I thank you for your kind comments about England in 2007, I was at that 36-0 game and didn't think I would be back in Paris for the final. The resilience showed by that group of players was remarkable and hopefully other sides can use that as an inspiration as to what you can achieve in times of adversity.
