The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the collage of pub regulars. We've got the big group pic from the HEC final in Cardiff, plus insets of ll those who couldn't make it
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Either that, or he is so quick that momentum always makes him vulnerable to being up-ended. I have seen him win penalties for similar offences many times. Obviously, he did milk the penalty when he hit the floor - and tried to milk another later in the game. However - I'd be interested to see some stats about penalties "won" by Clerc across all games. He does seem to be a repeated "candidate" for spear tackles.
What absolute horseshit. Wales were the better side and deserved to go through. Take that to the pub with you tonight. Don't attack the french players for diving. Silly nonsense.
Diving?
No - he was definitely tackled. He's a little whinger [pun intended] and the way he rolled around on the floor thereafter would have been amusing, had I been a neutral. A red card and a penalty are magic cures it seems. He was up quick enough afterwards.
As a point for thought, something you don't seem keen on doing - Clerc does seem to be "spear tackled" a lot. He was upended by the Tongan winger in their pool stage - and I've seen him upended in the Heineken before.
My question was merely - why does he seem so prone to being upended? There are plenty of little wingers of recent years who don't tend to find themselves the wrong side of gravity every time they are tackled - Robinson, Shane, Hickie etc. They are/were smaller than Clerc - so why does he flip so much?
I'm not accusing him of deliberately turning upside down - that would be a crazy thing for him to do. Although he is French...

He was upended onto his topside for dear sake! I challenge anyone in the same position not to be at least partly stunned by the impact.
Glad you brought up Shane as he is one of the worst when it comes to being tackled. His killer sidestep and pace often comes with his jumping into tackles, which result in him being upended. Cue Mike Phillips running in to protest. It was only when he played against Ireland (6n 2010 if memory serves) that he got penalised for it. Anyhow such a point is only valid if the tackler is going in horizontally not aiming diagonally up as Sam was doing. Are you suggesting Clerc is deliberately setting himself up to be flipped. Awful risk to take on oneself.

That is possibly the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard. Why would he deliberatley try to hurt himself? I've noticed no one has given out about Warburton in all of this.

That make it easier for you to understand?
So later in the game, when he kicked ahead, ran into a retreating Paul James, threw himself on the floor, moaning, then got up and ran back to cover when no penalty was awarded - I assume he was partially stunned then too.
Come on man. Clerc has always milked contact situations - he is within his rights to do this. However, it doesn't make him endearing.
Yes, Warburton drove upwards. As every academy teaches kids to do. And for the record - Shane hasn't been upended in a tackle I'd complain about all tournament and he's played Samoa and Fiji.
The question is about Clerc - he has been upended at least twice (think 3 times) this world cup. There haven't been many bad tackles at the tournament - how is this one guy involved in more than 1 of them (pretty sure he was upside down, resulting in a penalty against Japan as well).
Either players are trying to tip him upside down - OR - his contact skills aren't great - OR - a combination of both. The idea that he is tipping himself upside down would be a conspiracy theory, nothing more. One hell of a risk to take for 3 points.
My argument is that his contact skills aren't great. I would also say - that this is entirely unconnected with the referees decision, more a question about Clerc's contact abilities.
As far as today's game goes - great shame, should have won anyway with 14. Never mind, there's another chance in 4 years and at least we're in the semi-finals. Sure, we'll be playing in the "game no-one wants to play in" next week - but at least the boys get to be there at the end of the world cup - after all the effort they've put in its the least they deserve.

Well Oxring I think it (3rd place) matters. Specially if they beat a deflated AB's. That would be marvelous and a major boost in confidence. Not many NH teams beat NZ down there. Or OZ & SA for that matter.
Wales' fitness was possibly the best Ive seen in this RWC also. Poland worked well for them. It just froze de balls off Ireland in 2007.

Yeah, t'would be good to come back with a 3rd.
Would be easier if Warburton was able to play. Not as though we have another tailor-made openside.

There's a poll for it

And even better if they aren't deflated!

Leicester Tigers have got a seriously dodgy kit on here it's a really odd colour.
I hope the Scarlets can get a win here, it'll be good for the youngsters.

oxring wrote:Consistency would be hugely appreciated.
If Warburton's tackle becomes an automatic red - across the board, fine. It would be a great shame and spoil the sport as it would decrease the speed of contact - and as Piennar said - this is a collision game.
However - when you look back over the world cup - worse tackles have got away with less. I can deal with wrong decisions - as long as they are consistently wrong.
Few points for thought.
1. Vincent Clerc has now been "spear tackled" twice this world cup. He has also rolled around the floor after all manner of contact indiscretions. Much of this comes down to his woeful contact skills. When hit and hit hard, he is very happy to lift his legs up. Either that, or he is so quick that momentum always makes him vulnerable to being up-ended. I have seen him win penalties for similar offences many times. He does seem to be a repeated "candidate" for spear tackles.
2. Alain Rolland is a mortgage advisor, according to Mullins before the start of the game. That would be fine, but we're about to enter our 17th year of professionalism. The players are fitter and quicker and the stakes higher than ever before. How then, can the refereeing still be at an amateur level? Either we need more amateur refs or professional referees for international rugby.
Standards need improvement. Most people have been left talking about the referee's decision, rather than what was a great game, along with one of the gutsiest performances I have ever seen.
The guy,Clerc, is unlike some other wing backs, and jumps to avoid tackles. This ability emphasizes the inability of lumbering forwards to estimate impact and make amends for aforementioned trajectories, thus tackling him in mid-air and being left with the"Uhh,what do I do know, throw him away"syndrome.
Monsieur Rolland did his best to allow a Welsh return by offering a penalty against Mas when AWJones(I think) had released a ball and then pulled it back. It should have been a French penalty. But coming from an amateur, French speaking arbitrator, that is par for the course.
So I'm sleeping with Mrs G in December

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Horrible dilemma with Halfpenny's penalty at the end. I actually found myself torn between 2 positions - one of which was - wanting Wales to win - but the other wanting Wales to win with honour - and that was a woeful attempt to balance the scales from Alain Rolland. Clear penalty to France at the end.
PS agree absolutely re: his contact skills - he does throw himself at people and so tends to get chucked away a little bit.

Young scarlets back row having a big game. Aled Thomas is a classy outside half. Nick Reynolds couldn't stop a pig in a passage and I'm sure one of his legs is longer than the other. Having a whale of a time. Good atmosphere here.

That's got to do with your insinuations that Clerc cheats, that he's a whinger, that a flagrant,"bad"tackle on the top try scorer is meant to diminuish the opposition, that you are searching for an argument to cover the foul play of the captain of your national side, that's all.

Anyone know who coached the 1995 Springbok RWC Winning team. The media has me convinced that it was Mandela! Cannot for the life of me remember I'm thinking du Plessis but maybe just cos its a common name.

No Stag, he's not been one of the best. Pains me to say it, but he has been THE best. It's the best he's played since the Lions.
Evening all
Am surprised at myself at how gutted I feel about Wales going out of the competition. I am sure that all the Welsh regs in here are very proud of the endeavour their team has shown, and rightly so.
I actually feel better about missing the final next week now though, as I have no real desire to watch a French team that is far, far less than the sum of its' parts.

I know what you mean Pete. I think genuinely France will lose by 30 points
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Pete, beware, each team plays a "great" game in a tournament. The French, still waiting for their first top notch match' have openly stated that they want NZ for this exercise.I take France to win by at least 7 against either of the pretenders. They are in the final of the world's greatest international(spit) competition, and still haven't turned up.vice champions without even trying is not in the French mindset; since the "old-Hands" have taken over, after Tonga, Ml is just growing his tache, the players will win this for/by themselves.

I disagree. I think France could win it now. They are free. This is a one-off game now. All to gain and nowt to lose, from where they were in the pool and knockouts. It may liberate them.
Never write the French off. They love that sheet.
