The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the collage of pub regulars. We've got the big group pic from the HEC final in Cardiff, plus insets of ll those who couldn't make it
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Put them all out to pasture As.
I understand the difference with officiating in red zones but what really gets my goat is the amount of calls of the ball being "unplayable" when time is up on the clock yet I say is never called at any other point in the game.

AsLongAsBut100ofUs wrote:My views on the correctness or otherwise of the red card remain unchanged, so I'd ask folk not to comment in that vein. My question is to do with refereeing consistency - a number of commentators have suggested that the red today should not have happened cos it spoiled the game as a spectacle, or cos it was a semi-final, or cos Warburton has an excellent disciplinary record. All daft comments, imo. Much like trying to suggest that a game towards the back end of a season between two title contenders somehow deserves a better standard of officiating that a meaningless one in the depths of winter between two sides in the lower half of the table. But equally most referees seem to control the game entirely differently when close to the try line versus anywhere else on the pitch and also offer an alternative interpretation of the rules if the game is in the last 5 mins compared to the previous 75mins. How should this sort of inconsistency be handled?
How can it be handled??? By you stopping talking toilet as per usual

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I know it is said over and over again but the laws really need to be simplified and somehow put more onus on the players and less responsibility on the referee.
Also, there is no way of doing this that I know but commentators must stop acting as referee assessors. No problem if they get it right but that is not the case quite often.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
It does seem that there has been an unusually high degree of comment on refereeing performances (Welsh kick & Barnes, Owens in Samoa-RSA game, Barnes and Contepomi offside, Lawrence full-stop, and today's effort) - bit of a shame, has detracted from some of the excellent off-field spectacle that some players have tried to provide (thanks England, mainly!!)

Easy. Even morons in every country on Earth can say:
"Ah FFS Ref!"
"Offside! De phhoker was OFFSIDE!"
"Peno ref!"
"He tossed my hair on purpose Ref!"
"He dived ref! The cheatin Italian/Spanish/ South American basterd! "
Ref: "Enough of that language Pedro or your off!"
Sorted.

I don't know if I'd watch it again. Ireland vs Wales was a much better game, this was a bit of a letdown.

Agree with points.made by Munsty and Asbo. I think poor commentary is making refereeing much harder and creating confusion where none existed

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Consistency would be hugely appreciated.
If Warburton's tackle becomes an automatic red - across the board, fine. It would be a great shame and spoil the sport as it would decrease the speed of contact - and as Piennar said - this is a collision game.
However - when you look back over the world cup - worse tackles have got away with less. I can deal with wrong decisions - as long as they are consistently wrong.
Few points for thought.
1. Vincent Clerc has now been "spear tackled" twice this world cup. He has also rolled around the floor after all manner of contact indiscretions. Much of this comes down to his woeful contact skills. When hit and hit hard, he is very happy to lift his legs up. Either that, or he is so quick that momentum always makes him vulnerable to being up-ended. I have seen him win penalties for similar offences many times. Obviously, he did milk the penalty when he hit the floor - and tried to milk another later in the game. However - I'd be interested to see some stats about penalties "won" by Clerc across all games. He does seem to be a repeated "candidate" for spear tackles.
2. Alain Rolland is a mortgage advisor, according to Mullins before the start of the game. That would be fine, but we're about to enter our 17th year of professionalism. The players are fitter and quicker and the stakes higher than ever before. How then, can the refereeing still be at an amateur level? Either we need more amateur refs or professional referees for international rugby.
Standards need improvement. Most people have been left talking about the referee's decision, rather than what was a great game, along with one of the gutsiest performances I have ever seen.

I'd say Hughie's breakfast is over rated. Nothing compared to what I served up last week for the family. Rashers, sausages, pudding, toast fresh OJ, mushrooms, eggs and beans.
Beat that Hughie.

Otherwise, Im not interested. Us Clogs have high-standards.
Christ. Wales could have so easily won this with 14 men. Incredible. France were out on their feet. Another 5 mins and it was Wales game.
A testament to their fitness.
