The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the team photos of the World Cup finalists. Or the action shots (put up especially for Cari) of McCaw, Kahui and Corey Jane.
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I’d hate if it went to squad numbers. Or retiring a number after a player leaves the club.
I think it’s a bad attitude to have, no matter how much of a legend the player is/was…

Retiring a number? Does that happen?

I am with Mickado on that one.
Love the 1-15 set that is in place.
Some players coming out in football wearing like 65 and all sorts of squad numbers.
it's just too messy. keep this simples.

Happens in the US sports a lot. No one who plays for Miami, for example, is allowed to wear 13 because that number was retired when Dan Marino hung up his boots.
In ice hockey 99 was retired league wide when Wayne Gretzky retired.
It's a nice touch, but it's their tradition. Didn't Bath have a tradition of not wearing 13?

Ah but should SOB wear 6.5 when he is playing openside. Apparently he isn't a proper 7.

Didn't Argentina consider retiring 7 (i think!?) for Maradonna?

it's very common in basketball. they retire jerseys/numbers all the time over there.
some players that aren't even hall of famers have had their jerseys retired. I don't overly agree with that

10 for Maradona, but they never did it.
Those American sports need to be careful they don't run out of numbers.

Absolutely. And we should retrospectively retire 2 for Woody, 11 for Geoghegan, 10, 12 and 14 for Gibson, 10 again for Kyle, 4 for Willie John, 1 and 3 for the Claw...

Why don't teams, instead of retiring shirts, simply put the 'legends' initals on the top somewhere so for example: say BOD retires, Leinster would have BOD/something like that on the sleeve?

Having never seen Simon Geoghegan play I've always wondered - Why is he rated so highly?
- Never played for the Lions
- Only around 35 caps
- We poached him from England

On the jersey of the next person coming into it? that's a bit of unnecessary pressure on that next person to fill that jersey I would have thought.

Having never seen Simon Geoghegan play...
The answer was in the question.
Anyway, it was because:
1 He got Bill McLaren all excited
2 The rest of the Irish players were really quite poor, he was the best of a bad bunch (and before anybody else says it so were the Welsh players)

Stag he was an absolute breath of fresh air at the time. Gangly mazy runner who baffled the opposition and his teammates in equal proportions.

To be honest Stag not having seen much of him myself but at the same time. I know injury kept him from one of the Lions tour and I remember checking some thing before where they felt that he was hard done by getting left out of the 93 Lions tour.

Yes, one of those players that would run through a brick wall if the coach told him to. Played as if he was a foot taller and two stones heavier and injury prone as a result. The early 90's really were dark days for rugby.

Just a thought, unsure of it when I wrote it to be honest. How would it be possible to honour players then.....could always build statues of every player....Ulster would be quiet
Ah Rava you know you'd enjoy my country.....cider, rugby, ska + bluegrass music, everyone must wear flat-caps or bowlers or tribly's!! Perfect!!

Yes. Although the medicine almost killed the patient, and it is yet to make a full recovery - I predict that SH domestic rugby will go jubblies up in the next five years.

I'm not religious, but sometimes think we should bring back stoning!
Injury forced him into retirement, he would have had many more caps otherwise. Injuries also ruined one of his Lions chances, the other was political (he gave the Irish coach a bawling out after one defeat when the coach tried the "ah, there were some positives lads" approach. He went a bit angry and started yelling "Name them, f**king name them!" after that the IRFU did their best to undermine him.) When the Lions needed a winger called up as a replacement they told the Lions they could have Richard Wallace (a good winger but never in Simons class)
He had an electricity to him, any time he had the ball everyone sat forward in their seat. The Ireland team at the time was so poor only 2 made the 1993 lions tour but Geoghegan made everyone expectant, he could turn a game.
But we didn't use him. In one 5 nations he was given one (one!) single attacking pass. That's how poor we were.
The other thing, that not many people remember, is he was as good at the breakdown as BOD is. He would attack rucks wich a vengance. We could have used him as a centre if we had a coach who knew what he was doing.
Ah, I could talk about him all day. The most exciting player I ever saw. He played for LI and Bath, and when he was surrounded by decent players he scored at will in the club scene.

Geoghegan was awesome. A professional surrounded by amateurs in a period were the highlight of the Irish season was beating Wales to avoid the 5N wooden spoon.
He was lightening quick and hurled himself into tackles with no regard for his own health. He'd have walked into the lions test side in his pomp circa 1994-5 and if he'd have came along a generation later I'm sure he'd have got 50+ international tries outside O'Driscoll and D'arcy.

I'm thinking that our rugby tour company could do great business by offering Welsh fans the chance to punch Alain Rolland. One punch = £100

Young Geoghegan there was like a salmon up a byrne! The way he just ran through the personal bodyguard, he was like a camel being stung on the rump by a wasp, they'll be singing on the streets of Knebworth tonight...etc.

It's not the said thing, but I was more disappointed in Warburton. They know Rolland's style, don't give him the chance. It serves us right for all the Hubris in the run up. Some of it made me ill.

I put it down to RL defensive coaches not paying attention to the details between the sports
All that "It's a perfectly good tackle in RL" stuff is nonsense. A forward pass would be a perfectly good idea in American Football, doesn't mean it should be accepted in union.

Staggy - Is there anything you'd be happy to forfeit to fit in other stuff? I suppose it's a case of prioritising things and organising other things around the important bits. Tough job though.

Apparently they sent secret agent O'Brien to deal with it a week previously but they had to send in someone who could actually get the job done hence Warbs
