Festive boxing trivia quiz.
First topic message reminder :
Let's see if we can revive this old chestnut while we're still enjoying the festive season and, presumably, in light hearted mood. You know the score ; somebody asks a question and the person who provides the correct answer asks the next question, and so on.
I'll get the ball rolling with a fairly easy one :
One of the most controversial title fights in heavyweight history is linked to a true legend of boxing ( not a heavyweight, ) by a major US city and a relative who is not yet famous but will become famous immediately after the fight in question.
Who are the relatives, which is the city and which is the title fight?

I was thinking of Captain for the bonus bit but he's not posted on here yet assuming it is Mclagen?

Re: Festive boxing trivia quiz.
Correct, it's Victor McLagen. Was a soldier when he fought Johnson and went on to become an actor starring opposite John Wayne in The Quiet Man.

Why am I not surprised that a circus clown once fought against the world champ.

I should imagine that many of us are pleased that clowns can exhibit such versatility, az.
Let's face it, if they couldn't we might never have been able to enjoy your input here.

Re: Festive boxing trivia quiz.
What do Seldon, Ali, Holyfield and Wlad Klitschko all have in common (other than they've all held portions of the HW title, obviously)?
Please name each common factor as well...if that's clear enough without making it obvious.

And that. Something else.
I'll phrase it differently.
Before the year 2000 - what was special with regards to the opponents of Ali, Seldon and Holyfield?

The were in the division underneath Heavyweight...?
Not sure if that's right with Seldon, he looks massive but don't know his career very well.

Alright. There is something unique to Seldon, Holyfield and Ali with regards to their opposition.
After 2000 - Briggs, Vitali and Wladimir share the same feature in common.

They all defended their titles against former champs in their first defence.
Sheldon - tyson. Holy - Bowe. Wlad - Who cares. Ali - Liston.
Biggs - Foreman. Vit - Peters. Wlad - Who cares?

Coming down the right lines though. There was something, comparatively rare about at least one of their opponents styles. Or stances, perhaps.
Name it and the opponents in question.

Have to give it to Ghosty for Hipp.
Ali had Mildenberger and Dunn
Wlad had Ibragimov
Briggs had Ibragimov
Vitali had Byrd
Holyfield Moorer
and Seldong W KO10 Hipp.
Your question ghosty and make yours more understandable than mine

His bantamweight title was won without gloves I believe Windy although from what i've read the featherweight and bantamweight titles were effectively the same thing during the 1890's, weights fluctuating up and down per contractual agreement.

Wlad defended his title against Ibragimov (already a titlist). Sultan was a southpaw. One of the most boring fight I've ever seen, consisting of 12 rounds of nothingness. A cure for insomnia, that one. I believe it was that fight which turned HBO off HW boxing.
Not Dixon? Hmm. Testing one.

Think so (although if you find another I'll abandon that question and pretend it didn't happen )

Scrub that. Fitz beat Ryan to it by a year, now that I think about it. Can't be McGovern, either, so I guess I'm stumped.

Maybe I was looking at this the wrong way round.
Is it Fitzsimmons, and is the contentious issue the fact that some reckon it to be Dixon?

It is indeed Fitzsimmons, the contentious issue is also Dixon often wrongly being regarded as the man.
