First topic message reminder :
Can't see anything wrong with oil companies. Like every other business they are out to make money, but somehow it is frowned upon to make more than anyone else.
It is not the fault of the oil companies if there is future harm to the environment, as if there wasn't a demand or the product they wouldn't be continuing to invest in finding it. (if there even is an issue with the environment)
Oil companies probably put more money into alternatives than anyone else. Statoil in particular.
As for climate change, there is no doubt it is occurring, however considering the age of the earth is measured in billions of years and we are only able to go back as far as the last ice age (10-15000 years) to measure climate trends. I'm yet to be convinced of man's actual contribution. The number one greenhouse gas is not C02, CH4 or any other by product of our use, but infact naturally occuring water vapour, which our burning of fossil fuels barely make a dent in. Of course it's all about tolerances and thresholds, but with the likes of India, China and America being the worlds biggest polluters, I'm not going to feel guilty about European energy consumption. It seems very convenient that as people are reliant on fossil fuel then it is easy to tax it by both increasing it's price and the guilt associated with using it.
Anyway, all these lentil knitters who go on about the "evil" of oil have never ever given a viable alternative.
Personally I think Nuclear power is the way forward, but the uneducated hippies will never allow it.

I'm a double dipper.
I was going to stay here but joined up after some unneccessary moderating comments on here.
It was good to catch up with the 'others' but as SR says both sites are quiet.
Mind you it is a bleak January day with no real golf being played.

Sorry guys, I didn't mean to open up old wounds.
Super - thanks for the info. I've signed up. Looks almost identical and all the names are the same. Can't see the harm is participating in both. Looks like this is the norm which begs the question how did it end up this way (oops, opening old wounds again). Feels a bit like splitting up with the girlfiend but still having the odd booty call. I am almost feel a little guilty.
I have one more week at this job then moving to a bussier position, so will have less time to join in anyway.

I post on both...but to be fair:
1. My posts are pretty boring
2. I'm not posting a lot on either due to the four letter word
3. The professional golfing world had been quiet of late, so the boards have been quieter than normal
That said..enjoying seeing DC step ladder his way back up the leader board today, and bracing myself for his weekend snake back down. Curious as to see how Paddy holds/holes out and secretly hoping for a Goose or Ollie win for sentimental reasons.
Apologies for becoming so stupidly close to talking about golf

Gingrich.... he really scares me.
Kwinni, I read somewhere that the USA is heading towards a black majority population. In that case should Obama not be safe.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Thankfully Obama has a few pennies behind him as well, he has apparently had more campaign offices in the states which have held a primary so far then any of the GOP candidates. This may be normal for a president but I hope it is a sign that in no way does he feel comfortable.
I wonder if Americans will have the sense to look at the UK as an example of how conservative (and right wing) policies are not some holy grail for beating economic woes. We are probably in recession right now with record unemployment while I believe the US unemployment figures are improving. They could of course just cast their memories back to Reaganomics if they want to really scare themselves.

Mac, I think you'd find that if your beloved left were in charge they'd have to be making the same decisions as the Co-alition are right now, only probably they'd be more inclined to massage the figures to make them look good.
We are currently not run by a Conservative government by the way.
Labour are also the government of high interest rates and high inflation. Where do you think that would get us right now?

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
Hi Doon,
"USA heading towards a black majority population"?.
Not a bit of it.
But the white "caucasian" population is now only about 53%, the African American black population about 13% and the rest predominantly Hispanic, Asian, Native American or other ethnic minority (tho I believe those from Hampshire are included as white).
So, although white caucasians may one day find themselves in the minority, it will be other ethnic groups, not African Americans, who dominate. The kwini family are strong Obama supporters but the fact is that he's been a poor communicator during his three years in the White House, and the SuperPac billions could run Mickey Mouse against him and the outcome would still be divided. Hopeful common sense will prevail but not confident.
Mac, s_r,
Anyone in Europe who thinks Americans pay much/any attention to them, their cultures, their politics, their successes and failures, is delusional. The Republicans especially are extraordinarily dismissive of anything European.
All the more reason then for Europe to get out of Afghanistan, for instance. There'll never be any sort of meaningful peace dividend, just as there hasn't been in Iraq.
But Mac is right, Republicans worship at the shrine of Reagan and Reaganomics, as fatally flawed as they were, facts to the contrary of their ficticious fable be damned.

Re: Another Drive4show 'Anything goes' thread
I'm sure he's not laughing too hard because I'm sure he knows what they're capable of. From what I've seen so far of the potential Republicans, Obama ought to eat them alive in debate. Gingrich is a hawkish arse. He was right wing even compared to Dubya. I couldn't help laughing having seen a clip of his speech post-South Carolina. He said it was the most important election in ages and he, Newt Gingrich, felt he had to stand. Very decent of you Newt. He also then asked his audience to imagine Obama in a second term given the mess he's made so far. What? The mess he inherited from the Right Wing moron that went before?? Or the mess that's resulted from the Tea Party muppets? Look in the mirror Newt.kwinigolfer wrote:nbs,

Navy - I agree that Obama should be able to decimate Newt or Mitt one-to-one. And also agree that Gingrich is as you describe! My observation, however, is that if the price of oil (read gas at the pump), stock market, job #s are halfway decent, we should be celebrating a Democrat for the next 4 years in the White House. If not ...

Obamas approval rates have been poor through his term. Id like to see him have a second term but as yet he has done very little of any substance IMO and I think the jury is still out with the American public. He has seriously lucked out that the Republican candidates are so weak.

How much is that down to what he's inherited and the fact that he's stymied by having the Republicans take the House of Representatives a while back combined with the fact the Republicans, en masse, appear to loathe him? He's had a tough hand to work with I think.Diggers wrote:Obamas approval rates have been poor through his term. Most new presidents get elected because the countries in a mess, that's hardly unique for Obama.
Like I say I massively want him to stay and improve but so far the hype has not been lived up to.

Digs,
He's actually achieved a lot, but projected very little.
This country is a far better place to live in than the one he inherited, and there's a lot more hope for the future.
Unfortunately, so much of what needs to happen is taking longer than expectations dictate because the hole he started in was deeper than anyone could imagine.
I also massively want him to stay . . . . .

How do you suppose an investment of £1 in benefits, now, of any sort compares to the oppertunity cost of not investing £1 in benefits 5 and 10 years down the line?

Do some states just have a cuacus and no primary?

The thing is the right wingers of a tea party persuasion seem to want people to pay less taxes. So does that mean Romney is the new tea party poster boy?

Firstly Mac...I'm still here!!! I never was a prolific poster but as I'm a double dipper I'm now only half a non prolific poster!!
Mac again...got to be honest... the older I get the further to the right I move. I started way out left of left field!! Being brought up in a mining town with a statue of Keir Hardie outside the Town Hall that was hardly surprising. I had a pathological hatred of the Tories for how they manufactured and executed the miners strike mainly because of what the after effects were on my old home town.
I wasn't old enough to understand the why's and wherefores about how the 70's Labour gov't messed up. I do remember though how full of promise everything was in 1997 and what a long slow burning descent into complete and utter disillusionment and disappointment the following years were.
Whilst I still have some basic left leaning principles I can accept that left leaning governments CANNOT and SHOULD NOT run economies on their own.

Ah. A good question. I assume the phrase came about as a result of poor transport in the country way back hence having to use shanks' pony which would therefore take ages and make it seem like a mile was a hell of a long way. Wherever it derives from, it means a long way.Skydriver wrote:Having come across this phrase several times lately (including seeing it on this board), I am wondering whether a "country mile" is longer than a standard mile?!?
