The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the picture of David Sisi, Jannie de Beer and Glen Webbe above the bar!
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I think inexperience in pressure situations cost Glasgow there more to be honest Gibbo. Great defensive effort from Leinster but i cant help but feel that a better side would have knicked some points off Leinster there.

Yeah Billy, we rode our luck for sure,
But, we are very lucky a lot these days.
Glasgow should be proud and annoyed at the same time after that. They took some bad decisions. Huge at this level.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Alright; Ulster, Clermont Auvergne, Toulouse, Harlequins, Edinburgh and Cardiff Blues.
5 of those teams will be celebrating next weekend. One will be disconsolate. The games that will decide the two best runners up (as well as the three winners of those respective pools!) are;
Clermont Auvergne vs Ulster
Connacht vs Harlequins
Gloucester vs Toulouse
Edinburgh vs London Irish
Cardiff Blues vs Racing Metro
How do we see it panning out?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
The way I see it, we have to beat ASM to qualify.
One point will not be enough.
Cardiiff, Edinburgh and Quins (our likely competitors for runner up spots) all have games against teams for whom only pride is at stake and 2 of those will also have home advantage.
We'll just have to do a Leicester on them!

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
After some serious working out on the back of a fag packet, I have come up with the following QF's
Leinster v Ulster
Sarries v Cardiff
Toulouse v Clermont
Edinburgh v Munster
A bit of something for everyone in there I reckon, but having said that, if you check out my SG form, you'll see I can't pick a winner to save my life.
Still, Leinster v Ulster would be a cracker I reckon.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Hokey-dokey
Munster to pick up a losing bonus point at Sinners leaves them on 21pts.
Edinburgh & Cardiff to win with 4 pts each leaving both on 21pts .... ahh swap Edinburgh and Cardiff round as Cardiff have the better return of points from their head-to-heads.
Leinster to pick up a full 5 pts against Montpelier leaving them on 25pts.
Ulster to pick up the LBP against Clermont leaving Clermont & Ulster on 20pts, both will have 5 pts from the head-to-heads but Clermont have a better tries scored record.
Sarries to get the full 5 on offer against Treviso leaving them on 23pts.
Toulouse and Quins to both pick up 4 pts leaving Toulouse on 22 & Quins on 20, but as Quins have only scored 13 tries to Ulster's 18 so Ulster will go through in 8th place.
The full ranking I believe will look summat like this:
1. Leinster 25pts pool winners.
2. Saracens 23pts pool winners.
3. Toulouse 22pts pool winners.
4. Cardiff 21pts pool winners (9 tries + 40 odd points.)
5. Munster 21pts pool winners (9 tries + 30 odd points.)
6. Clermont 20pts pool winners 27 tries.
7. Edinburgh 21pts best runner-up.
8. Ulster 20pts second placed runner-up by virtue of having scored (probably) 18 tries to Quins (probably) 13.
You'll be right enough MrsP.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
If we get a lbp and score more tries than them or score the same number of tries as them and get to within 4 points of ASM we would top the group.
I think.
But then again, my brain is addled with this virus so...

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
No, you're brain's working just fine, it goes on points from head-to-head matches, tries scored and then aggregate points difference, so yes, if Ulster match Clermont on tries and get to within 4 points or less, they would in fact top the group.
See, I told you I knew nowt, Ulster have just gone from rank 8 to rank 6.

Jeez PJ have you learned nothing this weekend. Ulster LBP my arse. We will have to win some time in France so why not this weekend? I like the idea of being third seeds.
Imagine three Irish provinces playing at home in the HC quarter finals. That would be some show? It would also guarantee at least one in the final.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Im not even going to attempt cross-checking PJ's fag-packet info.I trust him.
Welcome to the Ulster QF of Hell that is the RDS MrsP. Sorry, make that Landsdowne. We'll meet in Fagans roysh?
Bring lots of posh crisps.
Its going to happen. The 1st and 2nd best team in Ireland, coming together for a massive game in Dublin. I thought that if Ulster beat Leicester(didn't beforehand, but ye thrashed em to a pulp) - it would be enough momentum to take ye to to a min RU spot. ASM is the worst place in the World, to pick up even a BP. But, if Ulster are really serious about moving on up , they must believe they can do that. I think you can.
Your big buy-ins are kicking-in now. Pienaar, Wannenberg, Afoa, Muller, et al. Earning their shekels rightly. They bullied Tigers pack, yes Tigers - off the field yesterday. Very few have done that. None that I can remember actually. Your indigenous key players - Trimble, Best and Ferris - have very few peers. Paul Marhsall with Pienaar at 10 - is the ticket for Ulster down there, imo. Be bold Mclaughlin. You have to take on the very best, to be the best. And. Ye beat them already. So. Who's to be afraid of?
Its all about focus.
Believe.

Love the way that man is thinking. Always aim for beyond the hole. Not ease up to it and fall short. In GOLFING terms bad people.

Nah! I'll stick with Rava.
Home quarter for us then we'll have our semi and your semi back to back at Lansdowne.
Sorted!

Unfortunately Mrs P I think any home game for us would be in Dublin. I just can't see them getting sufficient temporary stands in to get up to ERC requirements.
I would have no worries playing in Landsdowne Road. We have history there, great history.
