The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Jonathan Davies (JD2), and all of the weekend's 6 Nations debutants above the bar!

AsLongAsBut100ofUs,
You do realise you are mis-quoting the Declaration of Arbroath in your moniker, don't you?
'For so long as 100 of us remain alive
(We will not in any degree be subject to the rule of the English
For it is not for glory, riches or honour that we fight
But for liberty alone, which no good man loses, but with his life.)
Sorry to be a pedant but it kind of jars: more Mel Gibson than Robert the Bruce (for whom the clerics wrote it - I know he didn't write it himself). The original is so beautiful and simple that any variant on it seems a shame.

Your translation of the Latin original must be more accurate than mine - I think you'll find the 'But' is generally accepted by Scots folkSimonofSurrey wrote:AsLongAsBut100ofUs,

Fair enough, I wasn't trying to point score, just defend what I think is a really lovely and powerful piece of prose. Since, as you rightly point out, the original is in Latin, there must be loads of ways of rendering it into English so I'll butt out and leave you guys to say it the way you want and who, knows, maybe even to vote for it in a year or two.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Bore da.
I was in a taxi in Dublin yesterday listening to talk radio interviewing Gordon D'Arcy. He said something along the lines of: "we all know the best team didn't win yesterday"
I'm going to say my little bit now and leave it there. Bradley Davies will get a ban but Ryan will not. The shoulder charge was one thing but Ryan wouldn't let it go. He was standing up holding Davies down. It's no defence, but I hope that this provocation is taken into account as mitigation.
Kearney was excellent on the whole but should have seen a yellow card in the first half for clattering Priestland off the ball. He knew he had over run it but jumped anyway.
Ferris was silly to give even the impression of a dangerous tackle. It's funny I was talking to Stag about how refs make their decisions on this and he said its all about the elbow. Ferris' elbow was certainly up.
James Hook was very lucky not to see a yellow for a deliberate knock on.
However, my main point is this. Fine, gripe at the ref, say the best team didn't win and shout at the kicker, we do, but don't take the moral high ground on us next week as if that never happened.
Rant over. Unusually for me I didn't feel it appropriate to gloat as I respected Ireland's effort and sympathised with their fans.

Tommy Bowe had a deliberate knock-on as well which was as blatant as Hooks. There were a few other niggly off the ball incidents too. All in all I think the officials didn't handle the game well.
I can't believe D'Arcy said that and frankly I'm quite annoyed he did.

I'm not annoyed Notch but it did grate a bit at the time, more so because he was comfortably the poorest player of either side in the pitch.
However, I've said it now. I had a whale of a time. I can recommend Stag's tours very highly and I genuinely feel you will beat France.

Well I am- not to do with disrespecting Wales (he can disrespect away, no bother ) but if thats what they think in the dressing room, they're fooling themselves.
Conceded a try against 14 men then forced onto the back foot from the restart. Outmuscled and out thought. We were never the better side and we need to take a long hard look at ourselves. Certainly D'Arcy has been treading water in a green shirt for quite some time now. He's the beneficiary of Kidneys loyalty, which is his achilles heel as a selector, but I wonder how long that will last.

It's quite Welsh of Gordon D'Arcy to say that Ireland were the better team even though they lost.

I am with Notch on this. If D'Arcy has said this then he obviously believes this and is representing the feeling of the rest of the players in the Ireland side... Thats such an amazing thing to think considering what i saw in the match.
If the Irish players have this illusion that they were the better side then i fear for them. Time to bring reality into the dressinging room and admit that they were poor and in no way were they the better team on Sunday... Seriously peed off at that...

Just spotted this article
Have to say I certainly didn't see anyone misbehaving, aside from a couple of people climbing lamp-posts for a better view of the haka.

Glas, what did you think of Croke park??
Amazing. Everybody should go there if they go to Dublin. We watched Kerry beat Dublin in the pub and we could have seen the game live! After the stadium tour we were gutted we hadn't gone. Then again we were in Rome when John Paul II gave his last Easter Sunday service but watched it from our hotel beds even though he was only a mile away!
I had a go at hurling and the football in the museum bit and I have a huge amount of respect for the top players as a result.

Glas,
I don't think it's right but that is how it is. That's how the psychologists get them to see things and how managers/coaches want them to view things.
The desire to be the best has to come ahead of respect for the opposition.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
According to the BBC, Davies and FERRIS have been cited!!
Six Nations: Wales' Bradley Davies cited for tip tackle against Ireland
Six Nations organisers have confirmed that Wales lock Bradley Davies has been cited for the tip tackle that saw him sin-binned in the victory over Ireland .
Davies upended Donnacha Ryan in the 65th minute, earning a yellow card from referee Wayne Barnes, but Gatland admitted he should have been dismissed.
The Cardiff Blue faces a disciplinary hearing on Wednesday, 8 February.
"I think there's intent and if you look at that and ask me, there's definitely an intent in there," said Gatland.
"So I wouldn't argue with the decision of that being given a red card."
Italian citing commissioner Achille Reali had until 1700 GMT on Tuesday to confirm a citing.
Reali has also cited Ireland flanker Stephen Ferris following his sin-binning in the wake of the tip tackle on Wales lock Ian Evans that gave Leigh Halfpenny the chance to kick the winning penalty.

Interesting rumour, Brad Thorn to Leinster as injury cover https://www.606v2.com/t22696p50-hold-the-press-breaking-news#933940
He's won the RWC, the RLWC, SXIV and the NRL Premiership. An HEC would make for a pretty unique set of titles if it happened.

What about Ryan? The problem with him not being cited is that what he did wrong will only now be considered as part of the Davies proceedings and may result in an over-shortening of his ban.
Honestly, the words pifsup and brewery come to mind.

He might not have been hypnotised but his time in the professional game has taught him to think like that and that is how they want them to think.
Like I say I don't agree with it and it's the kind of thing that is putting me off elite sport more and more.

I'm all for positive thinking, but I'd say that that kind of stubborn self-delusion in the face of the evidence - 'We're better than any other team' - is more likely to lead to complacency than to an improvement on the field. 'We can be better than any other team' is healthy. There's nothing wrong with admitting that a better side has beaten you. That gives you the motivation to improve.

PM for Stag.
Lucky (and any other regs for that matter), are you about in Cardiff for the France match? Mini pub meet is a possibility. Stag is over I know. Tickets are like gold dust already so it may be a case of picking our pub to watch it as a gang. What do you think?
