The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Jonathan Davies (JD2), and all of the weekend's 6 Nations debutants above the bar!

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
That's a very succinct summary Hound, and I won't argue with any of it I don't think
The one thing that amazed me was how the Irish stood off Rhys Priestland more so than the others, that resulted in him half breaking the line 3 times in those last couple of minutes as Wales were working their way up the field, and getting in behind the Irish defence. I couldn't believe it!
I just don't think Ireland were as dreadful as some people are making out for the whole match is all. I mean they were still winning with 10 mins to go so they can't have been all that bad, as I don't think Wales were playing badly either.
And yep we did take most of our chances, although not enough for my liking. I was genuinely convinced that missed kicks were going to see us lose yet another match by 1 point again until 1/2p slotted that last one. Not sure I could have stomached that.

Yep. What a farce the whole thing is. I don't know if Terry is guilty or innocent but he can't be selected in the same squad as the brother of the man he is accused of racially abusing, and he certainly can't lead that squad, without compromising the unity of the group.
It's not about racism or whatever, those are issues for the trial. It's about building team spirit. I don't see how some English footballers are even going to be on speaking terms until the trial is over. How can you build a winning team with that hanging over you?
They've handled it shockingly badly.

Well thats the thing dreamer- if we were dreadful I would be a lot less inclined to criticise. Ultimately if you're beaten by a much better team, there's just a gulf in class, no tactics will save you.
What people can't stomach is while Wales were probably the better side, we played stupid rugby at times. We made stupid decisions tactically that may well have cost us the game. Our performance proved that we can match any side in the Six Nations, the decisions we made at key times and the tactics we tried to implement showed why we will never realise our potential as a side unless changes are made.

ha yeah but Notch, your last paragraph could equally have applied to Wales, especially in the first half, where you could argue we were playing the better rugby but still went in trailing.
That's how close this match was. It's such, such fine lines at this level.

Aye, but if you want to be amongst the top three/four teams in the world you can't afford any margin for error- especially if you don't have an O'Driscoll or a McCaw or a Carter to dig you out.

true but again, Wales were walking a very, very fine line of losing yet another match by 1 point. That would have been SA, France and Ireland then that we'd have lost to! There is always a margin for error in international rugby, not a big one, but it's there. Sometimes, it comes down to a smidgen of luck on the day. Then again, I guess you can say teams make their own luck. I dunno.
I just thought both sides were very, very evenly matched, and that's why it made the game so good.
My flat mate, whilst he's Welsh, had very rarely watched any rugby until he moved in with me, and he watched the game on Sunday and said it's one of the best that he's ever seen, so the rugby from both sides really couldn't have been as bad as some people are making out

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I think what would upset me as an Irish fan is that apart from goal kicking you can't really point to any major errors or poor play in the first 78 minutes, whilst Wales leaked two very soft tries due to terrible defensive positioning. Ireland couldn't play much better whilst for most of the game Wales didn't hit top gear. Every time we built momentum we squandered it by a poor kick, mis handling or a sloppy penalty. However when the chips were down, Phillips inspired Wales to put it in overdrive and take the match. For Ireland there was no spare gear.

Oh, there were few errors but our tactics were miles off. We were still in the game, as you say, because Wales didn't take their chances to put us out of it. The scoreline certainly flattered us.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Come on Glas, Irelands performance was full of major errors and poor play. The number of times we allowed the Welsh backs to get up a head of steam for example. The "hole" in the lineout in the first few minutes. Are you saying the Jonathan Davies try wasn't down to error on Ireland's part? What about POC's missed tackle in the lead up to North's try?
I could go on. Both teams made errors. Wales made better use of their possession than we did.

oh bah humbug, I thought the Beeb coverage would have a replay at HT of what happened to Cuthbert at the very end of the first half when he was hit a bit late by Sexton, but they didn't. With the zoomed out camera you really can't see what happened clearly enough to see how he got injured. Am thinking accidental clash of heads but can't be sure.

Georgie's gonna get you!
Just up the 2nd Welsh try in the match, hadn't appreciated how easily Georgie avoided D'Arcy to be able to line up an off balance McFadden. Just brilliant. Then a tidy offload and the accleration of Foxy. Tis a try that makes me happy!
Also, master chef is making me really hungry, and I've no food in the flat

Dreamer I think you are unique. Nobody had mentioned the late hit by Sexton in the endless wumming yet you drop it in perfectly innocently!
Mrs P, does it make sense to be upset by irrelevant keyboard warriors when the people with the job of actually making the decision agreed with you?

You are probably right but I don't know if you have seen the amount of bile that some people who claim allegance to the same country as you, I refuse to call them fellow countrymen of yours, have thrown at me and some others for the past few days when all we have tried to do was figure out if a tackle was legal or not.

Na phoener Cymro. That's why 't pub is here.
Let's have a light chat.
I've just paid my tax, I'm in the red for the first time in 8 years, both of my wife's sisters are pregnant and I can't afford to do what I really want which is to buy a farm. Oh yes and I've got a man sausage of a stockbroker on my case and I had to shout at hoodies that were jumping up and down on my wheelie bin earlier.
There we are. I feel better now.

I've just had a text from P1.
She went off to the USA today with school. Long journey so she asked me to make her a sandwich.
She forgot to bin it before she got off the plane and had an interesting time at Customs because it had ham in it!

Poor kid.
I think she was mortified.
And we all know how good natured and fun loving US border control officers are!
Actually, it reminded me of my first trip to the US. I was going to LA to visit my brother. He asked me to bring some sausages from a famous local butchers so I bought the bangers, got them vacuum packed and frozen as requested and off I headed.
My sneaky bro hadn't told me about the "declaration" thing you have to sign on arrival in the USA as he knew I wouldn't lie on it and his sausages would be confiscated.
Unfortunately I spent half the flight attending to an ill passenger( having the captain of an DC10 come down the plane to speak to you and ask you how soon he might have to land the plane if required and telling you how much it would cost when you have only been qualified a few months is a bit scarey!)
Anyway, all this meant I didn't get my "declaration card" to fill in until I had got the ill man off the plane and safely handed over to the ambulance staff. Of course, by that stage I was standing with the suitcase, illegal sausages and all in an empty arrivals area.
I stood at the Food and Drink Agency desk for ages until I figured I had tried my best to declare the stuff and it wasn't my fault no one was there to listen!
The brother didn't get the warmest hug ever when I met him "Land side"!
