The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Jonathan Davies (JD2), and all of the weekend's 6 Nations debutants above the bar!

Vincient Clerc was saying something about the Ireland match on Saturday night being dodgy, due to the weather competitions.

Personally I'll fly into Dublin if necessary. And buy an Ireland jersey.

If you do that, make sure you only have hand baggage as transfeering in Dublin is sure to have your bags end up in some exotic place whilst you are in Paris

aaaah I'm back in Wales
Had a really really good time out in Dublin, cheers to all the lads who looked after me out there, especially Mick for letting me crash at his. You guys are all brilliant, so diolch
The match was fantastic. I've managed to watch it back twice already and am gonna watch it again tonight, just such a buzz from it, still so happy with the win (even if I felt a bit guilty at the time, Mick, Micky T, Stag, Michelle and George all looked so I felt a bit bad for being so happy!)
Also spent a bit of time speed reading back:
Swanny - congrats on the job, so chuffed for you!
Rodders - penblwydd hapus/happy birthday!
Rev - lovely to see you in the pub again

Bit of a kip on the couch, well nice
Glad you enjoyed the trip to Dublin Shovey, would have liked to have been there myself
Spent the day visiting Signal Boxes today, firstly Farnham then Guildford. Preferred farnham because its an old school one with levers and bells, really good to see

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
ha nope billy, wasn't nervous at all on the way back!
Am pretty sure Roger Lewis was on my flight, but the more I think of it, the less sure I am. Can't see the chief of the WRU flying with Ryanair but then you never know....
Wierdly couldn't wait to get back and get my hands on the Western Mail (a sentence I never thought I'd type). Irish newspapers are pretty rubbish for any sort of rugby coverage at all. Even the morning after, think they only had like 2 pages on it, that's it. All the sports pages were taken up by Chelsea v Man U, I couldn't believe it!
Lucky - yep I did, would recommend the trip over to anyone!

I confess I did not.
Just so used to in Wales, win or lose, you're still looking at 10 pages + in nearly all papers, discussing the rugby. Was so weird not to see it.

You sure you're talking about signal boxes hoogs, and not gibbo
Dreamer - I read some pretty good reports on the game in Monday's Irish Independent (mainly by Hugh Farrelly).

Aye there were a couple out there Hound (that one in particular was a good read), but not much, like I said am just used to there being so much coverage of it back home, was strange to see so little out there.

Welcome back Dreamer. Glad you enjoyed the trip but I don't think we should allow you back if Ireland play that badly when you are there.
Asbo had the same effect unfortunately.
Mick(),
You have the Irsh press all wrong.
They will write 10 times the amount of column inches when we lose that they would when we win!

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
ha! Ireland weren't actually that bad MrsP, I said after the game if you'd have managed to win, it would have been just as deserved as Wales' win. The match and the teams were that close for large parts of it, that's what made it such an exciting encounter I think. Neither held back, it was brilliant.
Reading some of the posts on here, I can't believe the overreaction at the loss. (and that says a lot coming from a welsh poster, as we tend to over react more than most!)
Thomond - I picked the independent and the Irish times. Both were good, but there was just so little of it all. Guess I've been spoilt by the papers in Wales! (the quantity not the quality that is )

Ireland were pathetic and Johnny Sexton has no brain. We have had the usual ten pages of Deccie bashing, ROG/Sexton debate and B!tching about nothing in particular. We have taken care of it all Dreamer. You have mail too

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
There has been a lot of over reaction Dreamer. My own feeling is that our backline lacks a lot of physicality and Kidney mismanaged ROG v Sexton.
However set piece was quite good, there were few knock ons and handling errors, we managed to slow down a lot of Welsh ball at breakdown and didn't concede all that many penalties.

Considering Wales were without 6 players (it was 5 and then Warburton went off right), we should be beating a Welsh team without 5 frontliners. We should be beating any NH team without five frontliners.

- TRP is very Anglo centric though
Plus good coverage of the Welsh Principality Premiership.
I love the excellent national league match reports in TRP. When I watch Ealing I have a very good idea about the abilities of the opposition players.
I can imagine France having something similar

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
see Thomond i've been thinking about this, and one of the things that I think played into Wales' favour, despite us missing so many first choice forwards, was the lack of fear the players would have had in goign to play Ireland in Lansdowne.
Now I know Ireland generally have a very good home record and that usually palys into their hands, but when you consider taht Gill, Evans, Warburton, Faletau, Priestland, Davies, North, Cuthbert, and Tipuric had never played over there (I don't think any of them have anyway), they wouldn't have anything to fear. I think in a weird way that maybe took away Ireland's home advantage a bit. That might just be a big ol load of rubbish though
The only thing I didnt get was why you didn't kick in behind our defence more and go for lineouts, especially as the Welsh one was so wobbly. That would have been a no brainer for me.

RD they did try that but we just took a quick lineout and ran back up the field.

Now you're talking sense Dreamer. Why I'm criticising Sexton is because, Wales are very flat in defence, There was plenty of space in behind. You kick in behind them, not rocket science. Don't get me started on why we were standing 10m off the Welsh attackers, you don't let a big guy get up ahead of steam! Tackle low aswell, no point of going for the ball when your man is two/three stone heavier than you.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
ah but then you guys were going for that choke tackle thing Thomond and to be fair, a lot of timed it did pay off for you.
And like Stag says you slowed down loads of our ball and your set piece was v v good. There's loads of positives for you to take from it, just some tactical naivety (that might be the wrong word) at times seemed to let you down.
Wales were the same for large periods. Reckon there was a 15 minute spell in the 2nd half where our kicking was absolutely dreadful, so completely aimless and horrible to watch. And then we had our line out gremlins back! (although to be fair when it did work, it worked very well )

I just think it was a super match. Dreamer have a look at the article I wrote about the match on Monday.
I have not posted my views on the Ryan-Ferris-Davies incidents on a single thread and don't intend to as I don't want that to be what I remember about the game.
But what a cracker of a match. Best 6 Nations match I've been to.

Stag - exactly why I'm not going to comment on them either. Been completely dismayed by what I've been reading from both sets of fans on here.
The match is easily up there now in my best top 2 test matches I've ever attended (the other was Wales v Australia in 2008).
The atmosphere was fantastic, and it was such a high intensity game. Really, really enjoyed it. Hope more games in the 6N's are like it!

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Dreamer - faced with a side known for their ability to run the ball (and with centres and wings capable of doing so), Ireland did three inexplicable things.
Having got a defendable lead the three things were:-
1 Asking Sexton to kick a nigh on impossible penalty. Missed - possession handed back to Wales, who go upfield very impressively to score a try.
2 Kick deep from the restart, again handing possession back to Wales.
3 Standing off Wales and allowing them ridiculously easy access into penalty/drop goal territory. In a matter of seconds.
I can understand 1 & 2 to some extent. If 1 had come off, game pretty much over. After the try the restart should have been backed up with 'in your face' defending high up the field. Didn't happen.
For those three reasons Ireland did not deserve to win.

OK - the flip side to that last post is that Wales took full advantage of the opportunities they had.
Brillantly imo, and reminiscent of the 2010 comeback against Scotland at the MS.
