The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Jonathan Davies (JD2), and all of the weekend's 6 Nations debutants above the bar!

It still makes me angry that. Bloody Beirut.
And the worst part about it is we can't even take revenge by bombing that hotel- it'll just make things worse

I'm pretty sure the Europa is still is most bombed hotel in Europe. Something to hold on to anyhow. Apparently the told Mrs Clinton that, when she stayed there a couple of years back.
The french side terrifies me. I refer to my previous emotion after sunday's game. A could be on the cards.

I'm not worried about Fez.
It makes me sad that someone can not, or will not, see that Evans was at risk of getting his hand muddy and Ryan was at risk or getting his neck broken.

Whilst not backing down is an admirable trait, almost being in tears means the argument can't be worth it, can it?

It's not about not backing down Glas.
Losing an argument would never make me cry.
It's about what is behind that sentiment.

Fair enough Rav, I heard on Newstalk that he was reconsidering, so I'm probably wrong. Don't know if you read the piece, but it is mainly about whether he will get picked or not.

I know, I started to get involved this morning then changed my mind. The debate is too polarised and the parties too opposed to any idea of compromise to make it worth the bother in my view. Lets see what comes out of the disciplinary process.

I feel sorry for Dan Parks. There, I said it. Look at the record books and his boot has won a fair few matches for Scotland - I'm pretty sure he scored all the points versus Australia and South Africa, for example - and I'm sure he gave it his all every time he played. He must have known how unpopular he was. And for his last international appearance to be one where the try that came from his charged-down kick was the crucial score, and he was hauled off not long afterwards... I just feel sorry for him.

I always thought Parks received too much flak. People say he kicked too often and everything but Scotland don't have a great backline anyway so they are playing to their strengths.

Otoh (and I said this on the thread yesterday) if Jones had been holding the ball at the time then it would have been a no-arm tackle. And those usually get yellow cards.

Can't the IRB just say 'don't tackle round the legs and don't pick up players'? Simples.
Or does that sound too much like common sense?

Mrs Penfro,
Not sure how rugby would work if you don't allow players to tackle around the legs?
And picking them up rarely causes injury, it's how you get them back down that leads to the problem.

I really think its fair enough. I know it's a contentious subject but it seems totally unfair that someone can be a citizen of a country and not be able to play for that countries national side. This way people have a fair choice as to what side they want to play for.
Personally I think that we're in the situation where Ireland is divided in football is very sad, and just doesn't make sense for anybody. It's very detrimental for football in Ireland. I know we all defend our own provincial interests but I love that in rugby we all come together to support one team (sometimes).

I thought the Ferris tackle was a strange one. It was not good technique, and ironically probably safer than a legal Ferris hit.

Notch, not getting into this but the last time I checked there were two countries occupying the island of Ireland. Whether or not you agree or disagree with the FIFA ruling should not cloud that fact.Notch wrote:Rava wrote:Thomond I hope McClean gets into the team and has an illustrious career. Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Yeah, it's a fact but it's also a fact that everyone in Northern Ireland has every right to be considered an Irish citizen. There are hundreds of thousands of people born in Northern Ireland with citizenship of the Republic of Ireland- so why should the choice be taken out of their hands? They've a right to play for the country which they are a citizen of, no?
For instance, at various times in my life I've held a British passport and an Irish passport. Right now I've no British passport at all, just an Irish one.
If footballers want to choose to play for Northern Ireland, they will. Let them vote with their feet.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Voting now that's something every citizen should have as a right, isn't it.
But wait. All those thousands of Northern Irish citizens with Irish passports can't vote in Irelands elections. Not really fair that. But then they aren't really citizens are they?
Mind you I don't think there are many citizens of the South who would be interested in voting in the executions in the North.

Executions
Freudian slip or something more sinister?
Voting is more often based on residency, not citizenship. Although Ireland is unusual amongst Western Democracies in that they have no provision for those outside the borders of the state to vote. But legally, yes, they are indeed Irish citizens. Unless the Good Friday Agreement is repealed that will remain the case. That's the legal basis for the FIFA ruling.
