The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Sergio Parisse and Owen Farrell above the bar.

'Armed robbers have stolen dozens of artefacts from a museum in Ancient Olympia - the birthplace of the Olympics, Greek officials say.'
The wording / punctuation here makes it look like the Greek officials are saying Ancient Olympia was the birthplace of the Olympics.
I wish they named these BBC journalists.

I agree about sloppy journalism and I don't know when the Beeb stopped employing editors but is Olympia not where the Olympic games where held?

Olympia is where the Great British Beer Festval used to be held.

The Croke Park tour Rodders see if you can beat 103mph with the Hurley in the museum bit.

I had the power, but not the technique.
83mph.
Mind you I couldn't hit the target for toffee! More practice needed.

It’s all in the wrist. The best hurlers can puck the ball 80m without swinging the hurl through 180degrees.
MrsP – I know what you mean, and you’re correct, but that’s not really what’s being said in the article.

Its a dangerous game. The poor goal keeper for Limerick Joe Quaid lost a vital part of his gentlemans area in the service of his county.

When I heard about that the one word that stuck out in my mind was “exploded”. Truly chilling stuff.
Although, given how physical a game it is, injuries are fairly rare. I get the impression that pro athletes are so well tuned that sometimes the smallest thing can injure them, whereas the amateurs are less prone to injury but still every bit as skillful and enjoyable to watch.

Surely women don't hurl? It's like that saying, 'horses sweat, men perspire, women merely glow.' There must be a euphemism for women throwing up. Maybe women 'sigh' after a night on the asti spumante.

You would think they would have some protective gear similar to hockey goalies but I think it's just the helmet.

You should try to make it over for an intercounty hurling or football match.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
- question
Are the "A" teams at the provinces and the Wolfhounds a bar to good young players getting full international experience, or in other words just what does e.g. a young Irish 12 have to do to usurp D'Arcy and Wallace at 12?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Glas the million dollar question.
In short what they need to do is perform consistently in the Pro 12 when the internationals are away and ensure that when the big boys return they are now relegated to 2nd choice.
Tomas O'Leary, Denis Leamy, Simon Danielli (Scottish international at Ulster) all suffered this fate with Conor Murray, Peter O'Mahony and Craig Gilroy taking the jersey off them.
The big difficulty is that with Darcy, the man to replace him (Fergus McFadden) is a utility back for Ireland so he can never earn the right to take his Leinster shirt. Same happened to Donnacha Ryan at Munster for years. At Ulster when Paddy Wallace was injured the next in line Luke Marshall was injured and they put Spence in there which didn't really work.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I think Ireland would have actually benefited from leaving McFadden at home for the World Cup and bringing Fitzgerald.
McFadden would have had a chance to establish himself as first choice 12 at Leinster. The only game he started at the World Cup, he started on the wing. He got very little gametime and none at centre, if I recall correctly. I'm sure his omission would have provoked much gnashing of teeth but in the long-run it could have been better for us.

Does it, or does it show they are good Pro 12 players?
Priestland is not a good Pro 12 player, or at least he kept his international class well hidden in those games. What are you missing out on?

'May bound for Jordan over Abu Qatada.'
What kind of weird S&M party is this?

I wouldn't have thought Theresa May was into that kind of thing. As Chuck Berry said, goes to show you never can tell.
Hazel Blears is well into her S&M, though. She gives a whole new meaning to 'party whip.'
