The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, London
First topic message reminder :
The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
This week the pub has set up in the host city London, where we can watch the greatest athletes from all four corners of the globe compete in a multitude of Sports under the one thousand flame Olympic torch... each wearing the 5 coloured Olympic rings of blue, white (or black), red, yellow and green.
"Citius, Altius, Fortius" (faster, higher, stronger) has been the motto for the modern Olympic Games since their beginning in 1896.
(but not too high obviously!)
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Marcus Aurelius, Henri Didon, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, Sir Steve Redgrave, Cameron Van De Burgh, Marianne Vos, Murray Rose, Jesse Owens, Emil Zátopek,
Zara Phillips and her fabulous horse "Toytown" and last but not least.... Boris Johnson playing whiff-whaff against Danny Boyle.

Ah you know I'm only joking Biltong, it happened the last time SA shocked the world though...
Chuffed for you and Sotuh Africa. Really like Phelps but that was an outstanding finish by LeClos. Fair play to him.

Evening pub
Congrats biltong his interview brought a tear to my eye!
Just had a go at that athlete body match thing. A Canadian equestrian lady is my match apparently.
Is anyone else struggling with deciding what to watch? Whatever I'm watching I always have the horrible feeling I'm missing something exciting going on in another event.

A collective 'WOW'!! from all of us watching in the pub here.
The buzz in London is just awesome. Normally grumpy commuters helping out people with travel directions, and happy to do it. I hope these games foster that spirit and 'welcome' so often lacking in London commuters.

Ha, ha. Had to explain how the SA national anthem 'works' to some of the locals.
It's more of a footie area here, which is why I travel to Ealing for the TV rugby (and Ealing RFC games, obviously).

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, London
That medal ceremony summed up how good the Olympics CAN be:
1. The youngster getting a gold and burting into tears showing true passion and pride,
2. The old stager (phelps) gracious in defeat and showing him what to do when getting the medal and not dropping his smile,
3. The proud father (fair play bbc did well there) showing pride in their child!!
Really enjoyed that one!!

I've had a look at Dragged Up, Rev. I like the look of the Scarlets away in October. I'm not quite sure how I put my name down for the away trips, though.
Just keep an eye on the thread you posted on and when he starts getting names in, he'll add yours to the original thread. I saw you expressed interest.

Sorry that this is late for those who have been asking for it, but I have that link to the interview/article I was talking about. This comes from Glenn Pendlay's website, a quick google search will tell you all about him. He is an american weightlifting coach, one of the best in the country. The americans are very interested in the whole PED side of things as they are one of the strictest countries in the world when it comes to banning athletes. At least in the weightlifting, I am fairly certain it isn't so strict in american football etc.
Anyway here is the link, the original link is inside too, but it is in german. This is the translated version:

Also a chinese lifter finally won a gold in the weightlifting! He fairly destroyed his opposition too, it was quite remarkable. Once again the North Koreans were playing a sneaky game, as their best lifters were involved with the B group and nearly won bronze. I think this is going to have to be looked at, as the B group isn't as intense as the A group and the pressure isn't as high, which may be why the North Koreans have put their best athletes in there. Which isn't really fair in my opinion.

Yes if you go back to the 1880's that's when gold was discovered and when they started mining on the reef, it is really Johannesburg that came to life because of it.
Gauteng is the Province which includes the West Rand, East Rand, South of Johannesburg to Vereeniging, north to Midrand and including the Pretoria areas.
It used to be the Transvaal Province, but after the elections in 1994 they "re-zoned" SA into 9 Provinces.
Egoli is actually the native name for Johannesburg which means "city of gold"

Britain are expected to get some more medals today and perhaps even a gold.
From a NI point of view we have four very possible medal chances in the next few days with the Chambers brothers in the lightweight fours rowing, Alan Campbell in the single skulls and Wendy Houvenaghel in the cycling team pursuit.

Good Morning regs
Yeah, I think today is the day GB will open their Gold account... maybe more than one. It's been a slow start but there could easily be a gold rush in the coming days when the medals are on offer.

At least we're giving Spain a hard time in the Men's Hockey. 3-0 at HT.
They've been a very successful sporting nation these past few years.
We need to cut them down to size... somehow.

Awful weather today. Just about matches my mood .
Really enjoying the Olympics though. Delighted for Phelps and that young SA swimmer yesterday. The gymnastics has been amazing from what I've seen of it.
Feel sorry for the young Chinese swimmer though. I think the US are feeling the pressure from China on the medal table and trying to cast doubts over their medals. Its a bit rich for the US to accuse other nations of being drugs cheats imo.....

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, London
Well Luckless my view is that the majority of top athletes are using PEDs and this young girl has been unfairly and cynically singled out.
Yes the improvements in her performance in a short space of time have been remarkable but given her age profile that isn't that unbelievable.
There's plenty of other athletes I'd be casting suspicions on first. It's a disgrace how this young athlete has been treated.

He won't have much (if any) coaching experience, but he'll have bagfuls of knowledge and could make a real difference to our scrummaging.

Guys this is well worth a read. It is a transcript from an interview with Angel Heredia - Former PED Dealer to Athletes and Olympians.
Blows the theory that there are no cheats right out of the water. We might like to think our stars are clean but this casts doubts.

It is sad to think that a clean athlete has pretty much no chance of competing at the top level nowadays. Unless they are supremely talented. Then again the other supremely talented athletes are on PEDs, and will always be striving for that extra boost to their performance.
I have always wondered what PED control is like in rugby. Does anyone have any information on that?

Would be nice if they could get the flag image on the finish line in the rowing correct.
The other day it was "Ukraine" instead of Argentina and just now "Switzerland" instead of Australia.

Bolt is obviously the most talented sprinter to ever run in the Olympics, however I really would be interested to see what his times would be without the PEDs.

I think it is very unfair on her and Rodders is said she was singled out. Didn't two GB lads show a relatively big improvement on their personal bests yesterday? Now, they are probably not on drugs but do they deserved to be scrutinised too?
