The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, London
First topic message reminder :
The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
This week the pub has set up in the host city London, where we can watch the greatest athletes from all four corners of the globe compete in a multitude of Sports under the one thousand flame Olympic torch... each wearing the 5 coloured Olympic rings of blue, white (or black), red, yellow and green.
"Citius, Altius, Fortius" (faster, higher, stronger) has been the motto for the modern Olympic Games since their beginning in 1896.
(but not too high obviously!)
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Marcus Aurelius, Henri Didon, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, Sir Steve Redgrave, Cameron Van De Burgh, Marianne Vos, Murray Rose, Jesse Owens, Emil Zátopek,
Zara Phillips and her fabulous horse "Toytown" and last but not least.... Boris Johnson playing whiff-whaff against Danny Boyle.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, London
There was a conversation in here earlier today about GB / UK and NI. I didn't read it all, but I was going to look at how many irish competitors won medals for GB before 1921 (Irish independence) - out of sheer curiosity.
Anyway found an olympic history on wikipaedia. Now I know this is not the most reliable source of anything, but there was a section on Olympic Boycotts. Given that the word Boycott was given to the world by Ireland, it is appropriate that we were the first country to do so - Ireland boycotted the Berlin Olympics. This was not a protest aginst Nazi Germany, but because the IOC had insisted that only people from the Irish Free State could complete as Irish. The Irish Olympic committee objected and boycotted the 1936 Olympics.

I have a feeling Irish atheltes competing for Britain prior to independence were actually pretty successful . I think "we" (they're down as british, but we can claim it...) had a medal or two in tennis and a few other events.

for Alan Campbell!
Too much going on in the Olympics to keep up with but delighted for Jess Ennis, Andy Murray, Beccy Adlington, Phelps and Michael Conlon today in particular.
London take bow, this is magical stuff .

Not many disappointments I suppose really, athletics are not really our strong point so our best lads have started bar maybe Barnes. Some success for Northern Irish lads competing for GB, that's great our neighbours are doing decent. Let's have a big applause for........................
France.
France.
- Spoiler:
- Seriously though stunnign performance from team GB, enjoying eatcihng some of their gifted athletes, have to admire their talent. We might have to piggyback on your success.

You have the advantage of living "abroad" Thom. Over here, well I must admit I am not entirely enamoured of it all. The best description I heard of the opening ceremony was "skin-crawlingly cringeworthy".
I have been very disappointed with the BBC commentary. There are some rugby commentators who i really dislike because they see only one team on the pitch, will describe a playe from the other team (say Munster, for example) by saying something like "And a Munster player now has the ball and passes it to another man in red" etc. You get the picture. Well the Beeb are excelling themselves at only seeing the British competitors. You might excuse them by saying they are the BRITISH broadcasting corporation, and I could agree with that, but usually the Beeb commentators are very fair and give good commentary on all the competitors, but they have lost the plot in these games. They often haven't a clue what is going on and some of their commentators haven't a clue about the sports they have been asked to do.
Anyway, call me an old cynic, but if I hear once more "And XXX, the British competitor, just missed out in that event" I think I will thcream and thcream until i am thick.

Kia, I am mainly watching BBC coverag,e sure RTE are mainly recapping events. BBC have amazing quantiy of coverage. 24 channels for it is staggering. Are you just watching BBC1 and BBC3? Use the re Button and it's just the events not as much bias.
A fair bit of homerish stuff on the main two but that is expected same on RTE really.

Thom you should feel proud for the NI boys in the rowing, thats not piggy backing.
There should be no politics in sport. I just enjoy watching brilliant athletes and the back stories of so many of the competitors are just so inspiring. This games has been wonderful so far.

So how is everyone?
Poland won gold today in the Weightlifting, with Russia taking silver. Very unexpected, China or Iran were expected to win the gold.

Jaysus there's an odd transition, using 16th century methods of time (I think it was used in navigation on ocean voyages too?) to a 21st centure Merc with feicing everything, sat nav and all!

No satnav - hate the things. Still using paper maps (although they have advanced since Mercator).
I do meditation and the timer is for that! Teresa of Avila, 16th / 17th century mystic apparently sometimes used to tap her hourglass to make the sand run through faster when she was busy and needed to finish her meditation to get on with the next thing!

Interesting, I suppose we all do things like that though, who has ever been staying in a friends gaff and woken up before they did a,set off the alarm just to wake them up so you weren't bored off your head? I have done that!

I tend not to be an early riser Thom. When staying with friends or family, I usually set an alarm so that i don't stay too late in bed. Staying weith my daughter is worst. She is an early to bed, early to rise person. I have some difficulty keeping up with her. It will be interesting to see if this all changes when she produces her baby (due very soon).

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Games of the XXX Olympiad Pub, London
I'm not entirely sure the BBC are totally in control of the broadcasts Kia, they do provide the commentators without doubt, but I'm pretty certain the broadcasting is provided by the IOC and you get to take what they provide or not.
I don't think it's fair to blame the BBC for featuring the broadcasts that involve athletes from this neck of the woods, is it?
The USA have particular form for not televising finals that don't involve their own athletes, and that's not something you could say about the BBC, or for that matter the hundreds of thousands of people that have attended the events and cheered every athlete on regardless of nation.
They may have cheered a lot louder for "their own", but where else would that not be the case?
The crowds have been thoroughly respectful and appreciative of all athletes at these games, but they have saved their biggest cheers for the "home" athletes. the BBC would have to be moronic to ignore their responsibilities on this. They may have a "requirement" to appear impartial, but they are not in the least bit impartial when it comes to claiming their license fee.from their own "subscriber" base; the vast majority of which want to see the pictures that the BBC are broadcasting.
One of the most emotional broadcasts I've experienced so far was today's Radio 5 Live's coverage of Alan Green commentating on Katherine Grainger's gold medal - if I'd wanted to, I'm sure I could have found myself excluded from that; but instead, I had to wipe my eyes.
They had me at the Industrial Revolution in the Opening Ceremony...

Good Morning All... suppose most of you are nursing 'well earned' hangovers.
No worries - it was a huge day for GB yesterday and today will be just as big.
In the meantime... get these into ya.
(and for those at 's place in the South of France)

Fair play to the Chiefs...wanted it more and played good rugby. Think the travelling finally took it's toll on the Sharks but fair play a great 2nd half of the season for them. Congrats to the Chiefs good to see a new team win!!
