First topic message reminder :
Right, someone else fill this in if need be. I need to get my breath back, I need to calm right down. 6 golds on Day 8, we've wiped Atlanta away, more golds today, come on sailors, come on Christine, come on Andy, come on Louis Smith, LET'S SMASH 20!

Just brilliant from Andy Murray! 6-2 6-1. One set from glory, he's got Federer on the ropes.

Break of serve in the 3rd for Andy now.
The amazing gthing is he's 2 sets and a break up while serving poorly (just over 50% first serves)

Absolutely gutting that!! I can't believe he didn't get the nod the routine looked so much smoother...
Really sad that one....silver & Bronze to go onto the medal table but really hoping for a Gold Medal in that one.
So 1 Gold, 3 Silvers & a Bronze so far today...not a bad day to follow Super Saturday so far....come on Muzza!!

Gold for Murray
Silver and Bronze for Smith and Whitlock at the gymnastics...
Good five minutes

Gold for Murray. Now all he's got to do is get his head stright in time fo the mixed final.
Agree about the gymnastics - desperately unlucky not tp take the gold and bronze, and with the scores tied between first and second...

In the men's pommel horse final, GB have taken Silver and Bronze. And Murray has polished off Federer in straight sets. Gold Number 16
45 minute break and then Murray's out again!

I had to go out at 1-1 in the 3rd set, came back Andy was a break up, I literally felt sick when he was serving for the gold.

Just took a cursory glance at the Medals table and it appears that the mighty nations of New Zealand, Cuba, Ethiopia and North Korea are beating the Aussies in the Medals Table.

Re: Olympics Day 9
Haha, that is excellent..such bad sports the Aussie's!!
It will be interesting to see how the American's show the medal table this time around.
Beijing they decided it should be total medals not total golds. I have a feeling if they get more Gold's they will change their mind again..
As for us...3rd Must be in the bag now!!...Everyone should be so proud of what we have achieved not just in terms of medals but the spectacle that we have put on for these games...
I have been in and around the Olympic Village and down in Weymouth and have heard nothing but positives...especially from athletes who I have spoken to who have lauded the facilities on offer, the Olympic Village even right down to the food...where we actually got special meal plans in place for each and every country represented at these games...quite spectacular really.

Don't be mean now , Owen...I live here and most Aussies are pretty good sports really...sure they can be aggressively overconfident , and enjoy a good gloat , but they can be generous to anyone who beats them too.
Some of their media though ...you are lucky not to get the rowing commentary I've been listening to
But I guess there are one or two British newspapers you wouldn't invite round for dinner

Re: Olympics Day 9
Tophat...if the scores are tied after the routine then on a count back the person with the highest execution score takes 1st place...
So whilst Louis had a higher difficulty...7.0 to 6.9....his execution was .1 lower so he had to settle for silver!
Alfie - Only pulling your leg, your actual sportsmen are very gracious losers in most instances. I was more getting at the Media who are terrible...though your right we have our fair share.
Interesting to note the negativity amongst the press over their....we think out media give our sports people a hard time, i encourage everyone to take a look at Australian Media during this Olympics...they have been pretty scathing. I certainly would not want to be returning to Australia anytime soon if I was part of the Olympic team!!
You do have Pearson who should wrap a 2nd gold up for you in the Hurdles!!

Re: Olympics Day 9
Tophat - when theres a tie - they go back and lok for the highest execution of the routine and if they tie age -the difficulty of the routine. I think in this case the Hungarian just did his ever so slightly better though it wasn't as hard a routine and got it. Fair enough I think though am a little disappointed.
Re: Olympics Day 9

As I understand it , the score is a combination of marks for difficulty and judges scores for execution : when this gave identical totals they broke the tie by looking at the individual judges marks for execution and this saw the Hungarian fellow in front. I think once it would have been two golds , but they changed the rules to eliminate ties.
I stand to be corrected by any gymnastics experts , but I think that is it.

Cool , Owen.
But I should make it clear I still support the land of my birth anyway , so I'm lapping all this up
Much respect for Aussies though , and I trust there will be a few more medals heading down under.
Pearson will win barring a fall , and Slingsby will win tomorrow on the water unless his boat sinks...think there will be more so the Aussie papers will calm down a bit...

Re: Olympics Day 9
Yeh they do have a few medals to come so they should be ok....however I fear that anything they do now will be overlooked because of the performances in the pool...
They got the benefits of the changes they put in place post Barcelona 92' but it seems that they have stagnated recently whilst the rest of the World has caught up with them in terms of the swimming.
10 years ago it wasn't a problem as it kept their tally ticking over the problem now is that the lack of depth across other sports is being shown because the success in the pool isn't happening....
The problem they have it that nearly all of the funding is used in Cricket, Rugby, Aussie Rules & then swimming...very little is distributed elsewhere.
That is something that they will have to change if they are to get back to being a Top 6 nation in the Olympics.
P.S I hope on behalf of all us POMS you are royally rubbing our success in!!

Not sure Duty, I think so....but blimey things just get better & better...we are on a huge crest of a wave which doesn't look like slowing down anytime soon.
I keep saying it but this last week has just been incredible, everyone is feeling good, the country is on a high and what every single one of our athletes are doing is giving inspiration to young children all over the country...
and if we are honest the generation that need it is the one coming through now!
I firmly believe that this is an Olympics which will & has already to an extent 'Inspired a Generation'...
I have tomorrow off work so I am going to crack open a few beers take in this evening's events and then probably go back and rewatch all of the glory we have had these past 2 evenings!!

Really?? Do you know who it was...what a Class A *oss*r!!
I am going to guess that Mo answered it as politely as he could.
I interviewed Mo about 4 weeks ago and he is such a calm, polite and family orientated guy. Out of all of our medallists last night I was best pleased for him...I have a good feeling he could double up and have it on good authority he feels he has plenty left in the tank for the 5k.
What a year for him 10k and he beat The Cube...LEGEND!!

Yeah Mo just said "look, mate, this is my country. I was brought up here, my life started here". Pure class that man, I'd have found that comment really really offensive.

Ahhh break for Belarus! Come on Robson & Muzza hang on in their. Would fancy Belarus if it goes 3 sets I think....
Yeh chequered he really does ooze class...like I said having spoken to him I know what he has gave up and the amount of work he has put in to get to where he is. Would love to see him do the double...and if he did then Sports Personality get's even more interesting!!

Re: Olympics Day 9
Good explanation by the BBC about the last event in the Omnium:
Here are the overall standings prior to the omnium time trial:
Lasse Hansen, DEN 25 points
Elia Viviani, ITA 25 points
Bryan Coquard, FRA 25 points
Roger Kluge, GER 28 points
Edward Clancy, GB 29 points
The riders in the omnium time trial will go out in pairs, with Ed Clancy going up against world champion Glenn O'Shea in the seventh heat of nine.
The fastest rider of all will receive one point, the second will get two, and so on.
The rider with the least number of points after all six races wins the gold medal. Easy.
