The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Mendoza
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made its way to Mendoza - the city at the foothills of the Andes and one of the venues for the inaugural Rugby Championship.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Rory McIlroy, Sam Cane, Juan José Imhoff, Eben Etzebeth, Jake Schatz and Rob McCusker.

A few interesting things from that piece
They are the dinosaurs of the computer industry.
Compuware estimates that as many as 40% of the world's mainframe programmers will be retiring in the near future.
"I will be pretty valuable in a few years,"
The mainframe business "is a very disciplined and structured world," Kulpa said. "It's a unique job."
"It is not as sexy"
Sums you up perfectly Gibbo.

Gibbo, is there a difference between a main frame and a data center? Is a main frame the CPU of the organization and the data center is the hard drive? Or have I got myself confussed?

Mick, a Mainframe is just a massive number-cruncher with the power to handle and process vast amounts of input/output simultaneously. One where you need instant response-times and millions of transactions per second processed. And solid. They never go down. Perfect for huge banks, airlines and insurance companies. UNIX is the Op system that has taken over most mid-range companies. I still call them X-Boxes, which pishes the UNIX (Eunach's) whizz-kids off no end. Their systems don't have de balls to cope.
But a Data Centre can include both Mainframes and UNIX systems. It is just a company's Data Centre, no matter how it is made up - MF, UNIX, Windoze or a mix of all.
I remember valves and paper-tape FFS.
P.S. Im joking about the valves. But the 1st machine I ever worked on was an IBM 370/138. It was huge - a walk in job. Ran all of FIAT UK's business. And had a massive capacity of 512k. Half a meg. Unreal.
Lots of flashing lights a la Star Trek(great to play on when stoned). Now they look like linen-baskets.

Watching Match of the Day and it looked like it was always snowing. Even in Summer. Jumpers for goalposts. Thick steaming Bovril on the terraces. And we were happy. Young fit boys running free.
Listen, Id better crash for a few hours. Need my stunning-beauty sleep.

Congrats on the new gig Gibbo.
Good that they've got the right man for the job and you don't have to move. Perfect.
Bizarre hot day here. 21 degrees at 8am and 29 degs today in the city. Then 99km/h wind gusts and a 10 degree drop in temperature in half an hour. Still a week of winter left.

We had a company Olympics thing today, we made teams, and played off against eachother in typically corporate “fun” games, like egg and spoon and human Fussball etc. it was actually good skit, but I was in goal in the Fussball, which is basically no different to real football because you can dive and move slightly forwards or back, but anyway, I stretched my arm out and made a diving save, but I landed right down on my ribs, bloody sore, now it hurts to breath/walk/talk etc.
What’s my best course of action, head home and put the feet up or stick it out and try to blow through the pain.?

Could be a broken rib, Micko. Aren't human foosball games usually played on inflatable bouncy castle type things? You must have been flying. Super Keeper! Hope you're alright though.

The outside of the thing was inflatable T, but the “pitch” part was just grass. They have it on camera, made 3 saves in a row, the last one I was on my knees and I pushed off the ground with my hand to give me a bigger stretch, and also feic my ribs up. They’re not broken, no chance, but they’re bloody very sore when I lift my arm or take a deep breath or whatever. Probably just bruised.
That’s terrible new T, it seems to be so commonplace, tragic.

The manner it happened was pretty disturbing as well, Hoog would see it relatively often in his field.
Also the way you describe it makes it sound like you pulled a lung or something if that was something you could actually do.

My prayers are with the family and friends, Thomond, that is tragic news indeed.
Mick - I have had the same thing happen to me on one of those slip and slide things. It was a bruised rib, but breathing did hurt for a little while. If it is really painful I would get it checked out though.

I wouldn't have known the man himself very well he was a good few years older than me but would obviously know the family very well, so yes it's very sad. It's one of those things you hear about but never expect to hear about it with someone you know.

I don't want to back against my own team.
Cari - I had a text from Penfro re Saturday. I hope you can make it for a spot of lunch (if the City Arms does lunch) and the game. Trust me, Ealing like to run the ball* so we are hoping for an entertaining game. Hopefully the weather will be kind.
* They scored 1,000 points in National 1 last season.

I am absolutely cream crackered this week, and still got an ace three days to go. This might actually have been the best August ever

Howya CJ,
After work I'm going straight up to Cardiff for a friends birthday which will get quite messy I've a feeling, then train down to Llanelli late morning to get to Parc y Scarlets for Scarlets v L. Welsh (my first live rugby in yonks and oooh how I've missed it) and then a big family meal on the Sunday to celebrate my cousin's GCSE results (she's a brainy one!) and then I have the Mon and Tues off.
All in all actually the next 5 days look like they are going to be pretty blydi good
PJ - twas beyond amazing, I still can't really believe that it's happened.

PJ - N1 is a 30 game season. I think we bagged > 1,500+ in the promotion year. And our left wing, Phil Chesters, smashed Ashton's National League's record of 39 tries (when Saints came back up) with 77 tries.
Cardiff here we come!

Only 33 average then Hound? How disappointing... The promotion year was clearly a blip.
Any designs on promotion this season? It's a strong division to try and get out of.
Give the Penfros a hug from me.

But seriously, I DID punch cards on that machine. An IBM model 029 Keypunch machine. 1978.
Not many people know this, but punch cards are the best roach material on Earth. Because of the paper they were made of and because the punched holes allowed for excellent air distribution through the roach. Isin't science just brilliant?!
I saved 100's of em for posterity. They are down in the lockup.

Hi Dreamer, you Hero.
Chiefs beat Glasgow? Id say he's happy. Wonder did he go?
Man, I'm so looking forward to planning all the HC games now - away to Scarlets, ASM and Chiefs. It all involves regs teams, its going to be a total blast. And the ones in Dublin.
So I'll be asking me mates Glas, Chef and As, for lodgings.
Bring it ON!
