Summer Transfer Window
First topic message reminder :
Sunderland are apparently on for will Buckley again this weekend. Another one from Brighton.
Also after Nacer Chadli from spurs and Jonas from Valencia - along with still trying to persuade fabio borini.

Suspect Winston Reid might be Arsenes fallback option for Manolas.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
Amazing how the transfer window always hots up in the last week isn't it.
Makes for good television but must be very frustrating for managers not having players for a full pre season to hit the ground running.
Arsenal need a striker now.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
From Tim Vickery's article (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/28925575):
The ever astute Jonathan Wilson, author of Inverting the Pyramid: The History of Football Tactics, described him recently as "tactically probably the most important member of the Real Madrid side in 2013-14" in his deeper midfield role.
"He pulled wide when Cristiano Ronaldo went inside. He shuttled to provide the link between the midfield of Xabi Alonso (or Sami Khedira in the Champions League final) and Luka Modric and the forward line, [and] he sat in when Marcelo overlapped him from full-back," explained Wilson, who judges that Real's decision to let Di Maria go could prove as foolish as the similar blunder they made with Claude Makelele just over a decade ago.

I agree Dolph. Question is whether he can do that when Alonso or Khedira become Carrick, Modric becomes Cleverley, Ronaldo becomes Ashley Young and Marcelo becomes Luke Shaw when he loses weight. And you up the tempo and physicality.

Let's just hope it's money better spent than £50m on Torrez.

Good to see the PL taking players from La Liga this summer, even if some were deemed surplus.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
Madrid are like a conveyor belt of world class talent. Someone comes in, someone goes out.
Wonder who will leave next season to accommodate any new arrivals?
Di Maria was unfortunate to get the chop after the season he had for them. He does however tend to split opinion as a player. I'm surprised by the amount of people who don't seem to rate him.
Madrid got a very good price for him though. He's worth more in the £30-35m range.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
The market has accelerated this summer though, have to add £10 million to values.
Given Herrera and Shaw (and even Isco and Irramendi at Madrid) cost circa £30 million I'd have been happy paying £40 million for Di Maria, still over paid though.

quality signing for United, IMO Di Maria is better than James Rodriguez as an all-round package, should do really well in the prem.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
I'd feel more comfortable signing Di Maria, he's been a top player for a longer time period and I never like signing players after a good international tournament, very hit and miss that they replicate that form.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
Good signing for United, a nice statement of intent and a player that will add actual quality to their flagging squad.
My one slight qualm is the price, a bit steep, but I am sure such a fee will be forgotten if Di Maria makes a valuable contribution to a successful top four challenge this season.

Better at the moment but the difference is Di Maria's current level is as good as he'll get while Rodriguez has the potential to go beyond that.

Finally confirmed, a world class addition to the squad, should hopefully lead to a few ins and outs, time to get rid of the chaff really.

United's last record breaking Argentine signing didn't do too well.
Di Maria's stock has really risen recently. He's gone from being "not very good" to being "world class" in just a few short weeks.

Giroud out for 3 months apparently. Surely this will force Arsene to buy a forward now.

Don't see why Manchester United don't sign Alex Song. A player with premier league experience. Powerful and has midfield presence. Something United clearly lack.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
Arsenal are not planning to sign another striker to replace Olivier Giroud - even if scans on his ankle confirm a serious injury.
The club have no intention of recruiting any forwards on a permanent deal in this summer's transfer window.
Gunners manager Arsene Wenger will assess the loan market.
Oh dear
