I was in HMV yesterday and I nearly purchased a copy of Seven Samurai on Blu Ray. I didn't in the end because I could not find enough other films I wanted that would ensure I benefitted from the special offer, but I did think you'd approve of the intent. In the end I bought a book I already kind of own.

That's a superb story, Jeff, it hooked my attention immediately and did not let up until I was finished. I was particularly drawn to the conflict between the main character's film snobbishness and his northern thriftiness. The fact he then bought a book was an excellent twist, made all the better by the fact that he already sort of owns it.

I liked the duality and mystery of the tale, the initial part of the story suggests thriftiness as you rightly identified, but when you think you have got the theme nailed there is the purchase of a book I already kind of own which is more suggestive of profligacy than thriftiness.

It wasn't only the plotting I enjoyed, the rapier-like writing style was wonderful - no pretentious floweriness yet no stooping to slang and filth, just a consistent clarity that brought a poetry of its own. And no ham-handedness in trying to force an opinion onto the reader (though I very much suspect this sort of manipulation is beneath the writer).

Fairly clear that one shouldn't lend books to Jeff or you'll never see them again.

Am currently trying to think of a suitably off handed and film snobbish comment for the Ghostbusters thread. It will probably just be a list of obscure foreign films with female leads I prefer.

You might have to temporarily ban Trussman first as he seems to take exception to posts that don't congratulate him and the excellence of his opinions.

I will be sure to visit the boxing board in a reading capacity. I sometimes trespass on the violent tennis boards to follow up on Julius and have become quite stealthy.
