The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

Have you seen our fixtures ? Radical shake up of the division - 5 'new' teams including 2 we've never played before as far as I know - Aberbargoed and Crickhowell (other new teams are Wick, Cefn Fforest and CIACS)
I can't wait Penfro! Should be some tougher games now unlike Naval! Caerau 1st match up is a bit of a tough one though oh well training later!!
Morning all hope your all well, i'm getting in early at the moment so I can rack up some toil for a few days off

My girlfriends Dad isn't working. I give him a few quid each week and he'll drop and collect me until I get a car. Its a risky choice I know but every now and then you have to take a risk. They offered the job to another candidate but told me they didn't want to lose me and want to offer me a job too.

Well you won't have to stick to that arrangement permanently Staggy. You mentioned you were going to look into getting a car at some point? Can you work from home sometimes too?

I'm hoping to have car by end of October. If I can get a loan it'll be fine.
Its just risky compared to comparitively safe options I had available in customer support. But I'd be happier doing this and the company have shown a lot of faith in me.

Congrats Stag, that's brilliant news and sometimes risks are good things, and if you'd be happier there, then tis a no brainer really
Cari - yep that's the series, although I have to say Sean Bean has aged quite a lot, gone are his Major Richard Sharpe days.....

Dreamer - yeah, sometimes he looks rougher than a bear's bum and other times he looks very smart...depends what role he's in I guess.
Staggy - that sounds like a better opportunity for you, and you never know who you meet networking through this job, so it may lead to other things. If you get to meet Wally again...you know...just remember me...

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
BTW watched all 3 LOTR movies again over 4-5 days. Herself had never seen them and thought it was amazing. It was so enjoyable watching them with someone who'd never seen it before. When Gandalf fell, when Frodo was attacked by Shelob etc she didn't know what happened next.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Ha Stag yeah he does, although it is a Boromoir who has put on a bit of weight and looks a bit rough. Still got the sexy voice though...
Seriously well made series though, they've kept almost everything from the book which made me happy, usually they miss out chunks of them when they adapt them for tv.

I think if you try compare books and movies you will always be disappointed. I try not to do that too much any more as I could never enjoy films I had read previously.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Have you read the LOTR books stag? If you liked the movies you'll love the books.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I read the books before I watched the films. They remain the only books to movie adaption that I prefer on screen (that I can remember).
I feel that there is waffle, needless poems and too much irrelevance in the books. Tolkien does a class job in creating the whole Middle Earth culture but there is overkill. Too much of it which can scare off a reader.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
But do you not think that you can appreciate the culture of Middle Earth even if it were toned down a little
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
LOTR will be shown during the sci-fi / fantasy season in my place. along with the matrix trilogy and a load of Studio Ghibli movies.
I’m just going to stretch out classic comedy for a little bit longer.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Yeah Jackson did a great job extracting out the key action for the movies whilst remaining true to the books. I think the waffle, needless poems etc. really add to the books though.
If you liked those you should read the Stand by stephen king, if you haven't already. It's pretty heavily influenced by LOTR and an amazing novel.

To me its just overkill. You eat a chocolate bar it feels great. You eat 1000 chocolate bars you'll explode
To me he has amazing characters and two brilliant plots. However his insistence to divert into backstory, poetry and over elaboration of the culture can ruin the pace at times.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
And to me it just adds to everything and makes the book 100 times better then it otherwise would have been
Mick - how long have you been on the comedy now? The thing with the themes is that you're always going to think of another great film to watch before moving on to the next theme! think it's a good idea to do though.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Also I don't like the structure. We go too long without seeing certain sets of characters. Doesn't he do Fellowship of Ring and then split Two Towers into Parts 1 and Parts 2 with each being about the Legolas, Gimli, Aragorn or the Frodo, Sam, Gollum stories. I think that this takes away as you go too long without seeing them.
It would have been better to intertwine them. It would keep the flow of the book better.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Did anyone see the Lovely Bones? It's another Peter Jackson movie and was on the other night. I thought it was excellent.
I'm with dreamer on LOTR. All the backstory, language, poetry etc really adds to the magic of middle earth. Without characters like Tom Bombadil etc. the story would not be so rich. A lot of it wouldn't have worked on film though.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Don't get me started on Tom Bombadil. They're going through the Old Forrest, there's a bit of mystery, bit of adventure, things are moving along, we see that the Forrest is alive (Willow etc) and Tom Bombadil comes along and we learn a bit about him and the reader starts thinking "Oh wow, maybe he can mind the ring".
Perfect!!
But instead Tolkien spends the next thirty pages having our heroes picking flowers and singing songs with him

aaaargh this is so hard not to say anything!
Just.....ah Stag you already know what I think about Bombadil.

Luckless: RO'CK = Ross O'Carroll Kelly, ficticious Irish rugby player. Stereotype of the typical Leinster schools fan. In his 30s, living of his days of being a schools rugby superstar and teenage heart throb. Always has an excuse for why he didn't make it. Very flawed, major superiortiy complex and very arrogant especially with regards to social class and wealth. But a likeable character none the less.

ha, I wouldn't go quite so far as that.
Right, logging off here for a bit, need to actually do some work today and have supervision later too.
I'll pop back in around lunch time I expect.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I haven't read the Lord of the Rings books, but in Don Quixote there are long passages where Don Quixote and Sancho Panza are staying at various inns and someone else staying there will tell a story. The stories are almost all boring and I really wanted Cervantes to get on with things, but you can't just skip them in case there's something good there. But there isn't. I'd recommend Don Quixote to anyone, there's such humour and wisdom in it.

Morning all,
I think I'm in an argument with an old Irish priest based in LA on YouTube about how a skit tourism video about Limerick had nothing to do with English people and was just done by Irish people with self-deprecating humour. I'm trying to convince him English people don't hate Irish people.
Ain't easy.

Dreamer, we’ve been on comedy for a while now. It’s my favourite genre so I keep coming up with new ones to watch, she STILL hasn’t seen spinal tap! We’re going to move off it soon enough though.
Here’s what my movies will look like on my home made pc. Swish as phook!
