The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?

They always make a big thing about girls doing better than boys in school exams. Is that because girls are cleverer or just swots?

Boys have real interests as teenagers whereas girls have nothing better to do but gossip. Its logical they will do better

Wow wow wow, teenage girls have plenty of interests Stag. How else do you think Rihanna gets to number 1 or Twighlight becomes a hit movie!?

True. Or how Justin Bieber does so well. People like Cari and Dreamer
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
My take on it is that girls are more likely to take studying and revision seriously than boys at school.

Very true. There is also the fact they seem to know how to attack exams better while boys don't look at learning in that way.

I wouldn't tend to agree to be honest. I don't think there is anything innate causing it really.

Nah lads.
Just face it.
Women are better!

Women do better than men on average in exams but you will find that most of the best results are from men.

I refuse to believe that girls do better at school exams because they're cleverer than boys. It's not possible, I tell you!

A* percentages would seem to debunk that theory Thomond.
Seriously though. Well done to all who studied hard. I hope the results today and next week are all you hoped for!
And well done my neice!

I think it's either 85/90% Munsty.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Who's to say Munsty. I've heard all these kind of things before. Men are better business men as they are aggressive, territorial. Women are better at exams as its in their DNA to study better. German people are naturally good at science, engineering etc.
I think it could really be anything. I don't buy into the theres something in our genetics that makes things the way they are.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
They do some "stuff" to the raw marks depending on the difficulty of the exam and how other candidates have performed so it will ba different in each subject but I think an average of about 8 or 9% of results are A*.

MrsP, a lot of the people who get 7 or 8 A1s in the leaving cert are men,but women would have a higher average overall and more women would probably get 600 points.

Yes. I think we are told that boys have to do this and girls have to do this. I think that has to have a massive effect on how we turn out.

It's got to be both surely?
In all seriousness i think our education system is set up in a way that favours girls. There are definate differences between the way typical boys and girls learn, as well as differences between individuals of the same gender, but I think the system suits girls better.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Well obviously girls to better in our exams because we're cleverer, well duh.
Seriously though, I think when it comes to organising yourself for revision/coursework etc, girls just seem to be better at doing things like that, think that's all the difference it comes down to really.
Stag - I did not appreciate the Justin Bieber comment!
And for the record....I'm team Jacob

I believe that to an extent but I think there is something natural in it. Not that they are born to study better but because they aren't physically matched with men they find other things that are more suited to them.

I mean the age at which education starts. The way things are taught. The way things are tested.
You only have to look at the number of women teachers in primary schools to se it is likely to be better suited to girls.

They had a fella on the news talking about his results(the guy got 8 A1s) and the reporter asked him if he was heading out. The guy says "Not at all,I have Championship with Blackrock on Sunday!"

I guess that makes up for the loss of masculine points due to the fact you know who Justin Bieber is

It might be that boys go into exams relying more on natural ability, whereas girls, having no natural ability, will have spent weeks swotting up.

Possibily, I see what you mean. I don't believe it though. I think things like Mrs P refers to and things I alluded to are much bigger factors.

She says that the students are being taught mainly by females who have also been exposed to that environment. Thats not nature.
