The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Mendoza
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The Pub has made its way to Mendoza - the city at the foothills of the Andes and one of the venues for the inaugural Rugby Championship.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Rory McIlroy, Sam Cane, Juan José Imhoff, Eben Etzebeth, Jake Schatz and Rob McCusker.

Hugh Town is the 'capital'. You've got to get there by the helicopter service from Penzance, rather than the boat (The Scillonian).
A short flight, but it is an experience.
Hell Bay (on Bryher I think) is spectacular if the sea is up. Tis a long time since I've been to the Isles though. Memories of porpoises swimming along in front of the boat (when heading to a different pub ) and superb Cornish Pasties on St. Agnes.
A chilled out place alright.

Mon Everton, Fellaini is top class, United look awful, RVP was not needed. Kaka would be a great signing if they get him.

I think you mean SFX. Sound effects in films can help detect the mood or just add some bangs to it.....
After 9 minutes of injury time, Cork City beat Drogheda 3-2. Feicing pished I missed it, damn rugby.

Haven;t won in about 10 games so it stops the rot. Shades of the 2010 season (start of the fan run era), decent but not good enough, losing from winning positions (over 20 points dropped from winning positions) and struggling with confidence as well as struggling for goals (in the fan owned era, from 2010-present, we have been reliant on one player for goals, said player is now gone, we have replaced him, but reliant on one or two lads to carry the void he has left)
Still Rovers in the Cup on the box on Friday night, should be a belter.
United lost too so there's that bright patch....

Evening fine pub dwellers
How goes it? Is see United got beat. I watched the first half and Fellaini was in some serious form for Everton. I wonder how red Fergies nose got before the end!!!
The Olympic legacy lives in the Ozzy household,Hattie is now definite for an Olympic swimming medal in 2024 and is getting very imapatient for the paralympics to begin. We are having to research where the local proper swimming club that have competitions is as she wants to go and watch one!!!

Ah now that's real legacy, Ozzy. It awoke a child's dream. Excellent.
That's exactly what it is supposed to do. Sport that is. Corporations cant manufacture that. The athletes do. Young and old.

Seems to have bee an Keane-esque (oh how United could do with him now) performance from Fellaini, a top player surprised a bigger side hasn't snapped him up already
Good luck to Hattie, the Ps might be in the Olympics at that stage knowing their lot.....

Young master P does seems to be quite the athlete. Would be great to see him competing at that level one day. How is Mrs P, I've not seen her posting much recently, has anyone spoken to her?
Gibbo, the athletes did it at this Olympics, pure and simple, and I have to say I will be happy for my girls to grow up with people like Becky Adlington, Jess Ennis and Victoria Pendleton as role models as opposed to whoever this or last years winner of Big Brother is!
These Olympics can have a profound effect on the future of lots of people in this country and the country as whole, provided the politicians don't make a complete pigs ear of things, which sadly I suspect that they will!!!

It has left Britain up a creek with the finances (other mitigating factors too) but GB are in for a rough ride I think, not as cozy as people are led to believe.
The legacy of London will be the facilities and the thousands of kids who decide to play sport after, participation is important, doesn't matter if they are shoite like important they get out and do it.

It's great isn't Ozzy.
Isobelle has been equally inspired, though gymnastics is her preferred sport. Sis has been busy trying to find a club she can join!

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Mendoza
Absolutely T. Not every kid is suddenly going to be an Olympian, but what we need to do as country is ensure that if kids want to go out and do sport, the facilities are there for them to do so, be they good at it or not.
It's not like when I was kid (now I feel old), we used to go out and play football on a green two streets away and our parents felt we were safe. We played all day until we couldn't see one end of the green from the other as it was so dark. Now the world is different and unless there are proper facilities and it's secure parents have concerns about their kids going.
Kids also are more aware than we were and want more. The green we played on was on a slope you'd need to be in 2nd gear to get up, but we never cared or wanted more, we were just happy to have a ball to kick around.
Facilities now will be key.

That's brilliant Swanny. It really doesn't matter if it's swimming, gymnastics, cycling, running or even non Olympic sports, just the fact that kids are suddenly sitting up and wanting to do things is absolutely brilliant. Keep us posted on how little Isobelle gets on.

That's how it was for us as well, we had a slopey green and a decent one around 10 minutes away, they ruined the good one by cutting it with a massive tractor living ditches on it. Soccer was more the game for us, easier to play than rugby and hurling, less bodies needed but still all sports were played. 90s/00s feel a long way away now

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Mendoza
Let's hope the people don't allow the politicos to go back to their 'default' setting.
They are always happy to associate themselves with success, and then go back to what they know. It's a chance for our youth to find a better way of life, and boy do they need that. There's a mood here that is crying out to change things.
But already the political focus is turning to the proposed rail fare increases, scandalous as they are.
Sometimes I wished I lived in cave and had to hunt and gather for my lunch. Much easier to get my head around.
Would need some decent music though.
That's enough 'politics' for now.

Exactly Ozzy. I had a conversation with my sis a little while ago that I'm sure you'll identify with. It was a long conversation (!) but the general gist was pretty much how do you know what your kids are going to be good at? Nature plays a part as we know (unless Isobelle takes after her dad high jump is probably not for her!) but what intrinsic abilities does she have (and Jacob too) that need to be harnessed and drawn out? We kinda decided that introducing them to everything we can think of and seeing how they go is the best way. We know they're not going to be good at or interested in all of it but at least if they experience it they'll get the chance
And I certainly will, and please let us know how Hattie gets on. Who knows, we could be cheering them both on in a few years time!

I think it's a good idea to give kids a taste of everything swanny, you also do not know what they will or won't be good at anyway, not everyone will take after their parents/family. My family has a good GAA history, I was an okay footballer (nothing to write home about) and a shoite hurler.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Mendoza
As we're reminiscing about sport as a kid, we used to play cricket in an alley at the side of the flats that my mate lived in. It was marginally wider than a cricket pitch with concrete sides. We had a broken chair as the wicket at one end, and due to the concrete sides, you could only play straight to score runs. No teams and about 20 kids all trying to get you out, and once you were out you had to wait for everyone to bat before you batted again, so you learnt to not give your wicket away.
I played in that alleyway, with uneven bounce and no pads from when I was 8 years old against bigger kids who never aimed for the chair when they bowled, and I have the scar on my chin to prove it.
In April 2000 I went on cricket tour to Jamaica and played against a side containing a number of pros including West Indies A internationals. We were a club side led by a 56 year old who had played county cricket years ago. They batted first and scored almost 300 for 2 off less than 40 overs an declared. I was number 6 and went in after 4 overs with the score at 2 runs for 4 wicket. Our captain was at the other end, and 32 overs later, having lost about 2 stone in sweat I walked off to a standing ovation from the crowd having been peppered with short stuff and just stood firm and played straight. Only myself and the captain got into double figures, and I am 100% positive that what I learnt in that alley got me through that innings more than any coaching that I ever received.
I feel sorry for kids growing up who don't have those sort of things to look back on. Good times.

We used to play "houseroom" cricket and rugby. In the former, you had to keep the ball down lest you smash a window and you could only bowl spin. In the latter, you learnt to play in no space at all and take hard knocks because being tackled into a wooden bench was unavoidable

Swanny, spot on. Mrs O and I have spoken about this many times, and we are in agreement that our children will find their own paths, but what we will do, is ensure that there are as many paths available to them as we can, and when they choose one we will support them down it. if they get to a point where they feel another path is better, then we will talk about it and if it is right for them, we will facilitate their journey down that path as well.
My eldest daughter Niamh has done gymnastics for years and is reasonably good. During the time she has done it, she also did ballet, which she ended up drifting away from, football, tennis and other things. Then she found acting and singing. Now they are her focus, and boy is she focused. She still does gymnastics and enjoys it, but she, and we accept that she will never be the next Beth Tweddle, she does that for fun, and actually enjoys when she's asked to help the younger ones. The singing and acting, she has a real talent for. We only found this out in the last 2 years (she's 11). All you can do is give them the opportunities and hope they find their niche.
Somebody said to me recently - "Everyone is talented, some people just haven't worked out what theirs is yet."
If I help my children find theirs, I will have done my job as a father (well part of it).

Don't think she'll mind at all Ozzy, that is utterly fantastic. So pleased for her
Agree with everything you and TT said. You can't 2nd guess what a child is going to be good at or, more importantly I think, what they're going to enjoy. There is just so much possibility out there that a taster of as much of it as you can gives them a platform. It's up to them after that. Though I'm pulling rank and sorting out the kids taste in music, my sis and bro-in-law's taste is sooo bad I'm obliged to step in!
"Somebody said to me recently - "Everyone is talented, some people just haven't worked out what theirs is yet." Completely and utterly agree with that statement.

Morning all
Not sure what happened last night but either this site or my computer froze up and wouldn't let me post any more.
Swanny, she's 11 going 17, growing up far to fast for my liking!!!
I really shouldn't drink red wine on a school night, have a very fuzzy head this morning, lot's of tea I think is the solution.

That's what I don't understand, Rava. If someone in a shedload of debt went to the bank and tried to borrow even more money, they'd get shown the door. And I heard that the USA is in more debt than any other country in the world: well, who do they owe and why aren't these people / organisations calling in their debts?
N.B. I know very little about this kind of thing!

Lucky I know very little myself. But apparently the UK owns something like 500Bn of US Treasury Bonds. Not sure what that means. Chins own around 900Bn.

I never understood the concept of a "worldwide or global recession".
Surely somebody has to be making money.

As Toyah Wilcox once sang, it's a mystery.

I must also plead my ignorance here, so we'll all have to wait to see if Asbo comes in and can educate us.
But surely it's got to do with interdependence- i.e. the USA folds and their debtors lose a trading partner, and the countries that owe the USA money lose their lender which starts a ripple effect across the world...
I think people are still making money though. Private individuals- a sort of uber-wealthy overclass is being consolidated.

I'm sure you're right, Notch. Actually, I'm not 'sure' at all because like I said, I really don't know much about it. What was it Wittgenstein said? "Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent." But then I'd barely have anything to say in this pub!

Ah Luck it’s grand, anything we’ve said is suffixed with the “I don’t know anything about this subject” asterisks.
I heard there was a theory that after the American version of CERN was shut down (think it was the one in Texas) a lot of mathematicians got employeed on Wall Street and many of the systems and models that they put in place are the ones which are failing and causing this “global crunch” or whatever they’re calling it nowadays.

It's not a zero-sum game - so it is (theoretically) possible for everyone to be losing money, or everyone to be gaining.

That's something I find absurd, the new terms they've come up with. It's as if they thought we couldn't cope with terms like recession and depression, so they came up with something wishy-washy like 'economic downturn', which makes it seem like a mild slope.

Really? Its absurd isn't it that we have a system that allows for everyone to get poorer.
I like the simplicity that if I have £5 and give it to you, you are £5 richer and I am £5 poorer.

Accountancy is so Flip up it considers debts you are owed as assets. As you can borrow against assets, you can keep lending and borrowing and lending and borrowing...

You're dead right there. There is logic behind it though, it's to do with restraining the herd mentality - basically if people think things are going down the toilet they behave accordingly, hiding cash under mattresses etc. Once enough people start doing that, things do actually get worse and the predictions become self-fulfilling.

That's a point. Though the system we have, when it's working, also allows for everyone to get richer
