Tbf he only had a year left on his deal and we froze him out (bizarrely). So we weren't exactly in a great bargaining position!!

Certainly seemed to do a prolonged lap of applause at the end of the game. Will be disappointed but he's wayyyy too good for this league (and QPR)
In more news it seems Surman to Bournemouth is happening. This is fantastic news!
We're gonna need to sign a CM now tho

Cahill, Terry, Ivanovic, Zouma & Christensen.....they've got plenty of options + it's another foreigner, they need removing one from the squad.
I think this Benatia deal might be in the bag from 'It squeaks when it walks' Woodward!

If he does come in then it comes down to being able to finalise the Rojo deal with Blind as a back up plan, still crying out for a midfielder especially with Carrick injured.

Interesting news out of Old Trafford that Nani, Anderson and Zaha have been axed from the first team squad. They will train by themselves. Nani has been subject to loan move back to Sporting.

No one needs removing, you can have 17 foreigners. We have 17. 4 of that 5 you named are either homegrown or U21 so fulfil the quota for the 25 man squad rule. We also have Ake & Fabregas in that quota. Van Ginkel also fits in the U21 group. So with Moses loaned out we are at 24 men in the squad. If we need to sign someone that someone will have be homegrown. But for now we are fine.

I was hinting that signing benatia, one would have to go. That is all, anyway benatia is going OT or Bayern, so it's all pointless anyway

Nani just played 45 minutes - would well buy that for the other 2 though.

Fits the profile of a Glazer signing, young and with potential resale value.
Don't like this whole business of him going on strike mind.
Nani is a good player, loads of ability - was our best player for 18 months around 10/11 and unfortunately got a series of injuries. Probably best he is moved on now as he won't get much game time under LVG it seems and the fans are really on his back as he is frustrating.

nani is one of the most frustrating players ive seen in a united shirt, got ability but no brain whatsoever to apply any of that ability. had 6 good months at the club since he's joined and people still talk like he's a good player
id be delighted if we got rid of nani off the wage bill and not have to watch him again let alone getting a cb as part of the deal

Well thats a lie, he was our best player for 18 months, in 10/11 he had 10 goals and 14 assists, 11/12 he had 10 goals and 12 assists then he got injured, hasn't managed more than 10 league appearances in a season since then.
Had a good debut season too.
He is 27 now, probably best for all concerned that he moves on.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
Agree he seemed to have turned a comer only to suffer injury once again. He was also playing well when we were beating real until he was wrongly sent off. Anyway, time to move him on. Don't think much of Rojo tbh, would rather see blind but hopefully we still go after him.
Don't know what to think atm. Part of me feels surely we must sign a few players but then I just can't see it happening. Frustrating window to say the least and if we don't get the players we won't be anywhere near top 4.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
Not sure about Rojo at all. This could be another dud signing, if you ask me. I know he can play centre back but not sure he could handle it in the EPL, in terms of his stature or physique, much more at home in full back or wing back positions. If United go back to a four, surely Shaw plays left back? Really not sure about this, United skirting around the problem, just get a CB who's big, strong, experienced & commanding....Rojo is none of that.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
Tbh john I feel the same. We have our long term left back/wing back in shaw, then even Reece James who looked good on tour, would rather see those two given game time. Then is he a much better cb than jones or smalling? Not really, and he's not as good as Evans. I'd like to see Blackett get more games as he looks a real good prospect. Rather just go for blind who is better than Rojo and covers CDM also.

Can't disagree with the concerns but it's easy to say get such and such a player but identifying that player and then signing them are both difficult things to accomplish.
Theres a lack of quality defenders at the moment, they are in demand - city have just paid £43 million (reportedly) for someone lacking all the attributes you state.

We've already gone way over the odds for 2 players this summer.
Players of the required quality just aren't that interested in joining or have already moved clubs this window.

Don't necessarily agree. Think if you add Di Maria, Vidal, Blind and Rojo (all seemingly available) things look very different. No good saying you don't fancy these players. 3 were world cup semi finalists and 1 was in arguably the most attractive side of the tournament.

It couldnt have been £43m because they would of gone over the £49m limit setby FFP, more like £32m. As for Mangala, you state he doesnt have the attributes needed for a good CB, have to disagree. Seen him in the Champions League, big, strong & although he's inexperienced, should fit nicely alongside the commanding Kompany.
United are in a mess, it's astonishing what is happening. I don't buy all this, 'there isnt anyone out there' nonsense. There is & with unlimited funds, you can prize players away. I see you have Antonio Rudiger from Stuttgart as a late back-up, even Ron Vlaar would be available, if you push Lerner/Villa into a decision. Okay, might be a stop gap, but this isn't about winning a league, this is about top 4 & without making urgent decisions, that statement about 'life in the doldrums outside europe', might actually come true.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
Blind and Rojo are decent players, but really shouldn't be anything more than squad players for a club of Uniteds stature. Blind's been hyped to the moon lately, but if he was a fantastic option, a. wouldn't other top clubs be in for him and b. wouldn't United have snapped him up months ago given the mooted price.
Vidal top player. Rushed back from a knee injury and still nursing it I think mind.
Di Maria not sold on. Can't see him as a wing back. Flattered to deceive for Real until Ancelotti moved him to CM. Is he a CM in the PL? Not sure.

Big question for me, would United be Wee weeing about like this with Gill in charge?
Last season United, and Woodward in particular, gave Moyes no assistance until the tailend of the window when they overpaid for a guy who had a release clause a few weeks prior. However much money Woodward makes in commercials, that'll all be peed away if United fall down the pecking order because he can't conclude a deal.

There is chat he has a 3rd party owner who was owed £11 million, you set the 4 attributes not me and experience was one of them. Just illustrating it is not easy to find someone in that mould. We were linked with Mangala but this is the situation we are in, earn as much and play for the champions in the CL or for us with no european football, easy decision for players.
If it was easy we would have signed players already, the players of the required quality aren't available/interested or have already moved. You state Ron Vlaar who quite frankly isn't as good as what we have already despite a good world cup. I want us to sign some players but they need to improve the team, the ones available/realistic don't for the most part.
We have been poor and wasted our time on unrealistic targets, we could have had Garay on the cheap had we acted sooner etc
We will be alright for a top 4 challenge with everyone fit, we lost a 50/50 game and the nerves are still jangling from last year. Up to LVG to earn his money and get the team playing to the best of it's ability. We need a centre half, we are miles/years away from challenging for trophies.

Whilst it was stupid for Ferguson and Gill to leave at the same time, Gill never made a big deal from a European club as far as I can recall.
Woodward gets a lot of grief but he is being asked to make virtually impossible deals. He has gotten the 2 realistic targets he was asked for.

Re: Summer Transfer Window
You'd have to think he'll come under a lot of pressure if they struggle this season. For all the money they have (and have spent), it's hard to think of a formation they could line up in that doesn't have at least one big hole. Although then the question becomes do you replace him, or do you bring in a specific DoF type to work alongside hime?GSC wrote:Big question for me, would United be Wee weeing about like this with Gill in charge?

I'd have said yes to a DoF with Moyes in charge but LVG should be capable of selecting realistic transfer targets (even if he hasn't so far this year!)

I love all the media stories reporting, 'Woodward still in pursuit of targets'. It's like he's running around with a net, with a hole in it.
