The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?
FYI, the last pub was :

Thought they had their act together there, Munsty.
Thanks for the crash course tonight fellas. I must get over to your country one day soon and experience some of it all.
Fascinated with those old stones sticking out of the ground too - so much intriguing history and stories to learn in Ireland.

I'm not denying that. I understand how it works. I'm just saying that when teams go to play Dublin in Croke Park, they have home advantage.

Linebreaker wrote:I didn't realise Croke Park was home to Kerry. Is that 'home' because they feature regularly in AI Finals?
What is the reason for their domination... is there something in the water or just that that part of the land produces tough & athletic sportsmen?
If so, it's a bit like Canterbury/Otago NZ or parts of Qld/NSW country areas where you get big strapping lads who make great football players. Sounds like a generalisation; but it's true if you count the number of national reps from those regional areas.
Yes, Kerry has 36 All Ireland titals. Dublin has 22. The next closest is Galway with 9 and Cork 7.
Kerry's tradition for being good at football is probably to do with it being a rural area with few distractions. Since its mountainous/hilly, football would have been more suitable than hurling. The big hurling counties (Kilkenny, East Cork & Cork City, & Tipperary) have all fairly flat (good) farmland. Gaelic football is played in West Cork (mountainy) and the only pocket of Gaelic football in Tipperary is around the Galtee Mountains (Glen of Aherlow). They only play hurling in Kilkenny. Hurling is played in East Galway (flat) as well. Football is played more to the West of the county.
Failed Kerry gaelic footballers are: Mick Galwey (1 all Ireland medal) & Moss Keane. Both were told they weren't really good enough to play intercounty football for Kerry (even though Galwey was good enough to win one AI medal with Kerry)!

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
We have same situation with traditional clubs moving from their old (much smaller) home grounds - and signing deals with Stadium Australia.
Bulldogs - Belmore Oval (it was a fortress for them) > SA
Tigers - Leichhardt Oval - ditto > SA (the occasional game played at LO still)
Wests - Lidcombe Oval (in the heart of fibroland - with it's own dog track!) > SA
Souths - Redfern Oval (tarted up recently but only used for training) > SFS > SA
For the first few years the fans kicked up a stink but now they're getting used to it. Looks awful with only 15,000 people there.
Now, those clubs realise that although it might be inconvenient for some of the old faithful to get to SA - it is a quality venue and good place to play... especially when the finals come around.

Pretty good list that Gibbo.
I printed it out a few years back and I've filed it away. Must dig it out again sometime.

Thierry Henry wanted to play the second half with Arsenal in this pre-season cup game and the referee wouldn't allow it as it's against the rules of football.
What difference does that make in a friendly? Have some some compassion man!

Well,as you can tell I'm peed and close to crying my eyes out. Nothing to play for in August, this must be what it feels like to be a Limerick fan all the time. Congrats to Mayo they deserved, they fought for everything and they played a bit defensive but whatever gets you results. Hopefully we lose Counihan and Canty now.

Notch, I feel like Ulster fans did under Matt Williams(near the end) absolutely disgusted with the management and their ineptitiude and wondering how are some of these players still playing( Graham Canty stand up!)

That was more the Mark McCall era (shudder). Under McCall we were actually behind Connacht in the table at one point. Dead last- having won the title just two seasons ago.

Just joking Munsty. Its sport. Of course its ridiculous. He's a wonderful player. A player I have always loved watching. So like Bergkamp. Special. I was just aping the Sunday Wurdeld gobshoites, who called for his head, when Ireland needed an excuse for their own ineptitude.
Will that do?

Evening all, has been a hectic weekend so it's taken me half an hour just to read back and digest. Spent most of the weekend putting up a mini-climbing wall for the littlies and have just dropped off eldest at Heathrow - she's off for 4 weeks to Tanzania on some volunteer project, on the wonderfully named island of Mafia - loads od diving and counting fish and checking on the coral for her. Hope everyone has had a lovely weekend

Hi As, sounds like a bit of adventure for one so young. .
Too many bad news stories about our youth these days, but it sells more column inches and news reports than all the great stuff kids actually get out and do. Most of it for no financial reward.

Someone should take Clarkson and Hammond out. I went to Le Mans for 20 years and met far too many dicks like these.

Rav, Finn's rugby ball is packed and he has his new Scotland RWC shirt to show you - he's v proud of it!
Hound, I paid for half of it (18th bday present), but the rest she saved for herself - I'm proud that she wants to go out and see the world and is motivated to help. She didn't want to go back-packing with mates, just fancied something a little different, even if she was kacking herself when I took her to T3. Twill be good for her - the desire and capacity to experience are so important

Mark.
Maybe Airways strikes again. Stuck in Edmonton another night now. Was just about to head home and would've been home in 9 hours. Never mind though. I am a bit fed up of spending money mind and need a break off beer.
Munster, I tried speaking to you on Friday/Saturday about the Wigan game, but I was ignored Anyway, I got to watch it in an Irish pub last night, bar Tomkins' second. I'm looking forward to seeing that as I hear it's alright. Didn't know Setanta showed league highlights. Sure it was the full game too.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
evening, Home and decompressing after yesterday's"aperitif at 7,30,meal at 9" job
Apero at 9.30, and dessert on the table at 2 in the morning;that is not me, it's the Fench aperitif-for those arriving shortly, be prepared.Got home at 4.30 am and went back to collect my 'kitchen' this afternoon.
At least the money's good.
Now all is focused on The Bash, getting the herbal/weed levels down tomorrow(talking about mowing the lawn here, not my THC consumption), then setting up the camp site and party place.
If any of you have an idea of at least the day you arrive, that would be great;an ETA even better.
Just checked, and the only live rugby on TV next weekend is ENG/wal, so the set will be unplugged for the duration.

I get a daily rate, but it's all receiptable. It's for food only too, so it's rubbish. Speaking of which it's late lunch time now.
It's funny though, as we went from nightstopping in St Johns, to flying direct to not flying anywhere.
Anyway, off out for food. Up early tomorrow too, but hopefully I'll sleep on the plane if I'm shattered.

Bore da pawb / good morning all, welcome to Monday!
I've speed-read back and I don't think anyone mentioned the disputed run-out at Trent Bridge yesterday. Disgraceful behaviour from some of the crowd, they should be ashamed of themselves - but are probably proud instead.

Hughie, Ian Bell was run out - he thought the ball had gone for four but it hadn't. The crowd booed when India came out after tea, but England had persuaded India to allow Ian Bell to bat on, so then everyone cheered. India weren't obliged to let him bat again and they didn't do anything underhand, Ian Bell was just stupid to assume the ball had crossed the boundary.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
It was all pretty confusing to be fair, all the commentators on TMS thought it had gone for 4 as well, and the umpires seemed to take an age to decide if it had or not. Don't think the crowd were happy that the Indians had appealed to see if Bell was out or not. And no doubting Bell was stupid to just assume it had gone for 4. Geoffrey was doing his nut in the commentary box!
Glad India let him bat again though, all in the spirit of the game, couldn't believe how hostile the crowd got though!
And morning all

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
ha very true Lucky! bless him.
My commentary highlight of the weekend was Henry commentating on his first ever hat-trick. That was amazing by Broad, so bloomin exciting
I am very tired this morning. Went to bed at 10pm and thought I'd read for a bit, next time I checked the time it was 12:30am, curse having to read a good book when sleep and work get in the way! Can't wait to get home now and finish it.

That is annoying, Dreamer. I was reading Brian Wilson's autobiography and it was such a page-turner, nice short chapters, and before you know it...
I missed the hat-trick. Tough on Harbhajan Singh, he got quite a thick inside edge before it hit his pads.

Morning all,
I seem to have picked up a cold over the weekend, wasted a lovely day yesterday dozing on the couch with brief interludes surfing the net. I hate summer colds.
Berrick Barnes has declared himself available to play against the ABs this weekend
