The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the virtual rugby pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the Tommy Bowe photo on the bar. That's a banning offence
So pull up a chair....what'll it be?
FYI, the last pub was :

Donegal won by a point.
Limerick score an early point. I really think he should have gone for goal though.
Linebreaker,

Just some GAA stuff...kids kicking balls, hurling stick in locker room... and some thriller on RTE 2. all new for me.

Yes I follow it pretty closely but not fanatical. Swans but before they moved up here - Hawthorn.

Limerick have started this half at a fine tempo. Three unanswered points. 1-08 to 0-07.

Who do you follow in League?
Kerry get their first point of the half and follow it up quickly with a second one.

Manly-Warringah - I grew up there... in the blood. I'm living in former N. Sydney Bear territory now.... but they are gone from NRL. They still play NSW Cup (2nd tier) though.

I know them alright Linebreaker. I'm an NRL fan myself. Well the highlights anyway. Watch them every week. The Sea Eagles are doing very well this season aren't they with Cherry-Evans having a fine rookie season.
Limerick need a goal. They won't score the points needed to get back into this game.

He's playing very well...along with Kieran Foran. Lost to Tigers on Friday unfortunately.
Why are they playing in Dublin. Is that a silly question?

I'm a Tigers fan so I was happy with that result personally. Glenn Stewart has been playing very well hasn't he?
No that's a very good question. It's all about the money. Stupid decision to my mind.

It gives them a day out? I dunno why. It seems silly... Kerry and Limerick having to travel 100's of Kms, when they are near next door to each other. The GAA moves in mysterious... financial... ways.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
It's a quarter final Linebreaker. If there was a rule it had to be played on neutral ground, then fair enough, but Dublin will be playing in Croker, like they do in nearly every single match they play so......
To be honest, the whole championship needs a shake up.

Yes Munsty, Tigers finishing the season strongly... maybe they can repeat 2005?
Saints lost today to the Bunnies 24-34... some pundits suggesting they're losing the plot now. Broncos, Storm very strong as usual. Cowboys still up there but they don't play so well 'down south'. Newcastle had a big win over Titans 50-20... looking dangerous.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
They should build a new ground in the west somewhere between Tipperary, Kerry and Limerick - a decent 50,000 all seater. Would be better for those sides to have a showpiece ground for the big playoffs - with home ground advantage.
I guess you don't want Kerry to have too much of that though?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Amazing to think Limerick were the first ever winners of the All Ireland.
Linebreaker,
I think there is going to have to be a massive performance from someone to stop the Storm. Very very strong side. The Cowboys should get a boost when Thurston comes back, especially with Tate in the centres now.
Do you keep an eye on the Super League?

Breaker, the GAA have great grounds down there. 50,000/60,000 capacity. Cork, Limerick, Tipperary.
Chuffed. I just finished downloading (legally) The Rolling Stone Top 100 Albums of all time. Man. I had a lot of them On Album/CD, but the quality is just sublime. Who needs CD's.

Linebreaker,
We have Semple Stadium in Thurles which has a 53,000 capacity. It's a really fine stadium. In Limerick here, we have the Gaelic Grounds which is 49,000 so we're not exactly short.

Not so much SL Munsty... I follow too much football already. I'll watch the odd game if I'm up late otherwise just the Challenge Cup Final.
So are semis
Cork v Mayo
Donegal v Kerry?

Yes sorry about. Has hosted sooooo many Dublin games in the Championship in the past few years. Real fortress. And they certainly get nooooo home home advantage playing in Croker.

All right mate.
Didn't realise Semple was that big...similar size crowd to Landsdowne Rd.
Gaelic Grounds has been reduced in capacity? Didn't they have huge crowds there in the 50s, 60s, etc?
These two guys at each other throats in the RTE box... are they former players? Quite entertaining conversation they're having.

Gaelic football isn't allowed in Semple Stadium (Tipperary) In fact, gaelic football is banned in most Munster gaa stadiums outside of Kerry!

More seating in reduces the maximum crowds. To be fair, 49,000 is enough really.
On the guys on RTE, that's the formula they have. You're not supposed to agree with the other guys and debate and arguments is the port of call.

More cost effective to open up one stadium and hold two games. Also probably get a lot more neutrals if played in Dublin.

Funny stuff. Similar to the AFL (more serious) and NRL (bunch of jokers) commentary teams.
I could never understand the GAA situation about playing non-GAA sports. Was the only reason why they let Ireland play rugby at CP was because of the renovations at Landsdowne Rd... did they loosen their hardline on that rule?

They did. Fair play to them. It was a big step and a lot of people were still quite against it but it worked very well for both parties.

Same with Munster v Leinster in the Aviva.
I think the teams like it because it means they get a run out in a stadium that they are used to playing in if they reach the Semis/Finals. Croke Park is home to Kerry - thats because they get to play there a lot. Much more difficult for some AI finalists when some of the teams (outside Leinster counties) have only played there once or twice, ever!

I'm only (half) joking - gaelic football would be the poor relation to hurling in most Munster counties. Gaelic football wouldn't be highly rated in general. Rugby & soccer would be preferred.

Opps, meant to say the 2 Heineken Cup semis which where meant to be home games for Munster and ended up in Lansdowne & Croke Park.

I didn't realise Croke Park was home to Kerry. Is that 'home' because they feature regularly in AI Finals?
What is the reason for their domination... is there something in the water or just that that part of the land produces tough & athletic sportsmen?
If so, it's a bit like Canterbury/Otago NZ or parts of Qld/NSW country areas where you get big strapping lads who make great football players. Sounds like a generalisation; but it's true if you count the number of national reps from those regional areas.

Linebreaker,
Yeah 'home' as they get to play there so often in finals.
They do produce some very decent athletes but it's the tradition and structures in place that make sure they are always up there.
Rugby would do well to get some more Kerry men playing the sport.

I'm not complaining - I'm just saying thats how it works out that the Aviva & Croke Park are like home venues to Leinster/Dubs because they play there so often and its easy for their fans to get there.
