Olympics Day 8
First topic message reminder :
Just trying to get my breath back. THREE GOLDS yesterday, taking our total to 8. We sit 4th in the table, and with any good fortune should take 3rd today on Super Saturday.......will the cyclists, rowers, Mo and Jess make it a golden one?

NED and CHN are ahead by a good distance here, GBR, BEL and IRL grouped together with only seconds between them.

Athletics is a blue ribbon event. Those guys are on a lot of money! BBC ain't got that much.
Annalise still 5th I think, going steadily. Our showjumpers went through and disgraced gold medallist Cian O'Connor seemed to have a great round, think he had one fault, no little about showjumping but sounds good.

I really enjoy Johnson, he is one of the best they have out there and Edwards is growing into his role and is pretty solid, but I really cannot stand Denise Lewis. She just comes across as a bit dim and just doesn't offer the brilliant insight the other two do for me.

Feic, although RTE had her dropping 10 spots at one stage, been corrected now though. Not too bad but need a bit of magic from the Rathfarnham racer. Come on!!!!!!

I'm always slightly bemused to why one of the big American networks didn't sign Michael Johnson up, but seeing as he's been with the BBC for 3 Olympics now, I imagine he's either got a brilliant deal or just prefers working for the BBC.

I always find this strange, especially when they were legendary athletes for their country. It's like how we have Johnson & Thorpe for athletics/swimming, Warne and Holding for cricket, Becker and McEnroe for tennis.

Feel gold may be out of reach for Annalise, a medal is probably a big ask too but I think she is 3rd going into Monday's race.

By the looks of the points just one point separates the top four boats.
So it is all on who wins tomorrow... Alison Young in fifth is probably only in contention for a bronze.

It is much better coverage than the NBC's.

I guess it all boils down to - cover athletics live on BBC or C4, or the tape-delayed stuff NBC give?

Ladies Laser Radial Single Hander results after ten races, pre medal race
So Lilly Xu wins the first part of the series... Medal Race on Monday, double points see the medals realistically going to either of the top four.
Ali Young could get a medal should a real upset of form happen, but that i unlikely unfortunately.
1 CHN 5 8 11 3 5 4 1 4 1 2 - 44 33
2 NED 6 3 4 5 6 1 4 3 6 1 - 39 33
3 IRL 1 1 1 1 8 19 2 10 3 7 - 53 34
4 BEL 3 2 3 8 1 5 8 1 8 3 - 42 34
5 GBR 7 10 2 2 2 11 6 8 42 4 - 94 52

Re: Olympics Day 8
Jess Ennis as good as has the gold around her neck now.
Of the top 6 Heptathletes beneath her in the standings, only Chernova has a better PB in the 800 metres and that is only 1.31 seconds.
For Jess to lose the gold, the only - even remotely - realistic challengers in terms of time required, are Scujyte and Yosipenko.
According to the IAAF tables for Heptathlon scoring, Scujyte must beat Jess Ennis by 48.74 seconds and Yosipenko must beat her by 59.77 seconds. Bearing in mind that Ennis is better than them both by 8.11 seconds and 4.70 seconds respectively I just can't see it happening unless Jess is somehow disqualified, disappears into a black hole or is abducted by aliens.
I really, really hate declaring a result before it's done and dusted, but if the fat lady isn't already singing then she must certainly be clearing her throat. Provided nothing ridiculous happens, Jess Ennis will be performing a couple of victory laps in the 800 metres tonight.
Once the Heptathlon becomes "Mission Accomplished", it's then over to Mo Farah.
Go Mo...!!

Do you think Mo is more likely to medal in the 10k or the 5k? Obviously both is a valid answer, but if he could only win one, which would it be?

Re: Olympics Day 8
10,000 is his main discipline and he probably stands a better chance in that than he does the 5,000...though it is safe to say that the double is firmly on.
Bekele would be his rival, however the great Ethiopian has been out of sorts for some time now and I can't see him recapturing it here (famous last words)...Mo has done all his homework on everyone this time around so he is aware of all the other runners...unlike in the World's where he admits to being caught by surprise by the eventual winner Jeilan.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Mo in the run up to these games and he is one of the nicest athletes I have ever met. His work ethic is 2nd to none and the sacrifices he has made to get to the top of his sport are incredible....the man runs 150 miles a week...where he finds the time I have no idea.
Lets Go MO and Team GB...Keep the success coming!!

Yeh I know it is insane...like I said no idea where he finds the time. When you think that doesn't even include any of the other training he does i.e. weight work etc...really shows you the effort and work these people put in to get to the top...
I have so much respect for athletes and the people competing in the Olympics. The fact I have had the pleasure of being around some of them, interviewing them etc has just opened my eyes to how much it means to them and the sacrifices they make....Im a huge football fan but these lot put the likes of Terry, Ronaldo, Rooney etc to shame!

Mo Farah was born in Somalia, but his father is English born and the family came to Britain when Mo was eight years old. He has lived in this country ever since. He has an English born wife who is expecting twins by him, and they will be born in this country.
I'd say Mo Farah is British by pretty much most yardsticks.

Yeah i think it is clear what he means though. Mo is from african stock. I think he also actually lived in africa with his mum as well. However Briitan was the nation that got him into the sport so he clearly should represent GB!

Re: Olympics Day 8
Was interested to see Eilish McColgan ran in the women's steeplechase this morning.
She is the daughter of former 10'000 metre runner Liz McColgan who won gold in the 1991 world championships and silver in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. She was BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1991.
Liz McColgan credited a lot of her success in the early 90's to the increased level of naturally occuring growth hormones in her body due to her pregnancy and birthing of Eilish. It's nice to see McColgan junior is following in mum's footsteps.

Well, from seeing young Eilish on the highlights, she certainly hasn't been tucking into any pies..!!
She didn't qualify for the final of the steeplechase, but she did as well as could be expected. One for the future, methinks.

The women's team pursuit Final will be around 17:45 but before that is the Men's omnium with the 30KM points race in a few minutes. The women's hockey team are currently 0-0 at half-time against China - as it stands we're going through to the Semis.
