Olympics Day 8
First topic message reminder :
Just trying to get my breath back. THREE GOLDS yesterday, taking our total to 8. We sit 4th in the table, and with any good fortune should take 3rd today on Super Saturday.......will the cyclists, rowers, Mo and Jess make it a golden one?

2 more heats to go, Dai Green is still in. He needs the 3rd place athlete in the next 2 heats to finish with a time of 48.20 or over. He'll still make the final if that happens.

No he's the son of some black guy from Hounslow, London. Making him British.
Mo Farah was born in Somalia, but his father is English born and the family came to Britain when Mo was eight years old. He has lived in this country ever since. He has an English born wife who is expecting twins by him, and they will be born in this country.
I'd say Mo Farah is British by pretty much most yardsticks.
Without trying to sound like the BNP, he isnt genetically British... Which is why he is a good distance runner.
Hmmmm.... a contentious argument, but I can see where you're coming from. Then again, how many Australians can call themselved ethnically "Australian"...? The last Australian gold medallist of Aboriginal descent was Cathy Freeman (the way this Olympics is going, they'll be phoning her up and telling her to get her spikes back on.).
How many American athletes are from First Nation tribes..?
Probably China, of the major participating nations is the most ethnicaly "pure".
Having said that, it has to be recognised that Britain is a multicultural society..... and that's cool with me.... and we embrace all the peoples and cultures of the world. Mo Farah grew up in Britain. He was given "a fair go" and he has embraced this country as his home. That's fine by me. When I see Mo Farah, I don't see a Somalian immigrant, I see a Briton.
You know something... We hear Americans call their country the "Land of Opportunity". I think Britain goes one better. Britain is the land of EQUAL opportunity.
Go Mo.

Jen, in a lot of cases, es there is some discrimination in British sports I feel. The number of Asian footballers with British heritage is awful. Something like 5 between the 92 top 4 division clubs.

It's a little idiosyncracy of mine. It used to drive my English teacher nuts, which is probably why I did it. Sorry, but I can't help doing it.... it's a habit now.

Re: Olympics Day 8
Some of these results are being portrayed as very unexpected, particularly in the swimming and athletics. Loads of athletes are winning golds who the commentary/punditry team don't even mention beforehand.
The Adlington race was a prime example, do they just go on qualification times and do no prior research?

Ahhhhh, now you're asking something we could really get our teeth into and I think we could have a good discussion on this one, but I feel this is not the time or the place.
Perhaps if you start a thread on this issue in the footy forum and we can go for it from there. I have my own thoughts on this issue and would be most interested in yours, too.
I'll look out for a dedicated thread.

I've just found out that Fran Halsall of GB is in the 50m Freestyle Final at 19:30. Hope she medals but...50m? Ridiculously short distance.

How come so many of the 100m-400m male runners swagger around like angry rap dancers after doing well in a race.................Usain Bolt being the obvious shining example??
Is it a macho thing or what?

I guess the problem if you come up and do all the flashy "look at me" stuff, you've got to make sure your jumping is worth looking at otherwise you look like a prat.

Except he never did very well
He should learn to speak the national language, that way we may be able to understand what he says.
