The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Gibbo's Ma and Brad Thorn above the bar!

Exactly. If you don't get the try you look a muppet. Italy made exactly the same mistake later in the half though.
My phone is on the blink, even though I went to see about it on Saturday.

That was a great move, Notch, and a brave call from Rory Best. Even so, I'd take kicks at goal from early penalties. As Brian Moore said yesterday, you can't defend against a penalty kick, you just have to stand and watch. Unless you're Sean Lamont, of course.

Going to the corner and turning down early kicks at goal. Did Ireland do that against Wales to their detriment?
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Not this time, but in the World Cup.

Yes that was it. It has good and bad effects. Munster did it in the HEC Final 2006 and I remember Foley saying after the match the Biarritz team were saying to him that it was worrying them - thinking Munster must have had a move and big confidence in themselves and wondering why they turned down gimme 3 pointers.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
There's nothing quite like the confident strut to the lineout of the forwards whose Captain has just turned down 3 easy points.
Just as there is nothing like the dejected trudge of those same men back towards the next lineout in their own half when their planned move went wrong!

Totally agree MrsP, one of the most exciting things that can happen in a rugby game is the walk of the 8 forwards towards the lineout after the ball has been stuck into the corner. Love it.

Going to the corner is intent. So it misses the mark sometimes. I'm a fan of it.
Going for the posts is safe. It TOO misses the mark sometimes. Risk v 'safety'? Risk for me, as 'safety' is never as safe as the name suggests. France probably lost their game yesterday by playing 'safe' and going for penalty points rather than going for some corners.

I think Rory Best grew as a captain in many folks eyes by making that call on Saturday!

He won me €140 MrsP so its all good!!!! It was like a slow motion crash over the line by Best.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I don't know what you mean Stag?
The way I remember it Best side-stepped three defenders and ran it in under the posts from about 60m leaving the Scottish backs floundering in his wake!

Dropped the shoulder into Mike Blair. He was always going to make that line, pure determination
Good shunt. Many Ulster fans in my section. Renditions of 'Stand Up for the Ulstermen' when Best and Trimble scored. Fans from other parts of Ireland clapped along in a good natured fashion, despite facial expressions which suggested they were both baffled and disorientated by this behaviour.

He did well to hold onto the ball after he hit Blair.
Anyone else notice that McFadden really used his low center of gravity to good effect when burrowing over for his try…?

Fly, I'd say France lost yesterday because they didn't work themselves closer to the line for Trinh-Duc's drop goal. That, and their tactics were awful from the start. The only time they looked good was when they played outside the kicking gameplan and ran the ball.
I hope they carry on kicking the ball on Saturday!

Notch, after Tommy Bowe "scored", Gibbo, Hughie and I sang 'Stand Up for the Ulstermen'. The crowd around us loved it. I'm not sure Asbo did though

Nowadays you can only dab against the foot of the post, so not much difference to crossing the line

Parra I think kicked two penalty kicks (someone can correct me as I seldom do the replays) with only minutes to go. I remember thinking he's not going to have nearly enough time to effect the win by so arrogantly taking kicks when he should be trying for a corner. I also thought then that England will punish you for the arrogance. England did. One of the worst displays of end-game management I've ever seen by a supposedly battle-hardened professional team. There was no urgency only cool belief that they could manipulate the final few minutes when the truth was they couldn't rightly manipulate the first 75.

They were certainly lacklustre when Sharples was off the field. It was a disappointing performance all round, although I was impressed by England. They scored some of the best tries of the championship yesterday.

Certainly as long as I am refereeing you have to ground it against the post. Touching the post is itself not enough.
Honestly not sure I like the idea of Stand Up for the Ulstermen at an Ireland game. Another example of people being provincial fans rather than Irish fans.
Actually I really dont like it. Its like chanting "MUNSTER MUNSTER" at an Irish match.
I just dont see IRISH fans behind their team. I see so much of people cheering on their own. Why dont the Welsh act this way.

Carlos Spencer got booed at Lancaster Park while playing for the ABs once. Made me ashamed to be a Canterbury fan.

Not a pop at anyone here or at any one province.
Just think as a whole people (and IMO players and management) are unable to park the provinces at the door when Ireland comes along.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I don't think so. It was just a few lads on tour having a laugh and everyone else enjoying it- the Scottish fans and other provincial fans enjoyed it too. A few minutes later the very same group of fans started a rendition of 'The Fields of Athenry'.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Stag - it happens with Welsh fans too.
Don't you remember at the Ire v Wales match, we had the 'Georgie's gonna get you' chant and the singing of Sospan Fach - both those are Scarlets things, not Wales. So it does happen, granted it isn't actually chanting your regional team name, but they are still two things synonymous with the Scarlets region

Also should add I don't s ee a problem with it myself, if it's a song to get the crowd going, nowt wrong with it. Maybe not out and out just chanting your province/region team name, but songs are always good at the rugby.

The Fields of Athenry is used by Ireland in soccer, by Connacht, by Munster and the Irish rugby team. It doesnt mention any province.
I know its only having a laugh and a mess. I just think its yet another example of people going to the games without giving IRELAND their full support.
Its like I heard Munster fans bitching at the Ireland v Italy game that Zebo and Denis Hurley were holding tackle pads all week and werent available for Munster to play. One guy actually said "Kidney is wrecking their form anyway. I'd happily let Leinster and Ulster off and let us prepare for the Heino quarters"
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
That's always happened, but Sospan Fach doesn't upset the other fans. If anybody had half a brain in the Ospreys they would make 'Calon Lan' their own as it was composed for a Chapel eisteddfod in Swansea.

I love the fact that 'Calon Lan' is sung to three different tunes.
Not simultaneously of course, that would sound terrible.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Well, thats my point Stag. These fans were giving their full support to the IRISH team.
The only reason they sang Stand Up for the Ulstermen was as a bit of craic. Everybody was having a bit of a laugh, the ball wasn't in play. The rest of the match they were very vocal in support of Ireland.
I've heard Sexton being booed by lads from Munster, that seems more of an example of what you're talking about. this isn't so much. I think there's room for good-natured banter at international games.

Lucky - tis pretty cool isn't it? I know at the Scarlets we usually alternate between two of the tunes for that one, just for a bit of variety, tis good.
Also, just want to say how chuffed I am Ben Morgan has finally shown how good he can me on the international stage.
Although I'm not surprised it happened against France. Before that England had played Scotland, Italy and Wales - all of who know what it's like to play against Ben in the Pro12 so he was heavily marked (it seemed like it to me anyway). France didn't mark him anywhere near as much first half, and well, we saw what he can do then!

Stag,
I'd much rather hear the whole Irish crowd sing Fields or Molly Malone or Stand up for the Ulstermen than have them silent.
We've talked about this before. Ireland fans don't really a A song to sing at these games.
I don't see it as supporting only the players from your own province at all, in fact I'll happily sing all those songs.
What would you have us sing?

France lost the game when Parra converted to make it 22 - 24,
They were always going to go for the 'French Way' - a drop goal after that, but they had taken Beauxis off
If they'd missed the conversion they would've had to go for try

Well I'm not sure that is true Lucky but it is also not really a song that leads itself to spontaneous crowd singing.

That's true, Mrs P. The point is that someone (Stag, for example) could create a 'unifying' terrace song and it would feel articifial. Crowd songs are spontaneous.

I agree Lucky and that's basically how and why we ended up with "Ireland's Call".
But it's also why I like us singing Fields and Molly. It's just that some Munster and Leinster fans wont sing the song associated with the other!
I'll sing all of them!
