The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
First topic message reminder :
Welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub - a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no defacing the pictures of Gibbo's Ma and Brad Thorn above the bar!

Gotta say Munsty, there have been some hugely enjoyable games at Ealing. And the rugby is only part of it, the banter with opposition fans is great. Jersey were a cracking bunch.
It could also seem that way because Wasps have had a poor season.
In the English leagues National 1 (3rd tier) is incredibly competitive with teams playing different styles. There are some famous clubs in there as well. Blackheath, Coventry, Fylde and Rosslyn Park. I really enjoy the whole experience.

I'm moving away from my main argument into the tired one of North v South whereas I'm talking about pro v amatuer up here.

Your right. Lets stick to Pro v Amatuer because I do actually agree with your point.
I was just putting it in as a "bear it in mind" but I do agree. Its logical too. Amatuer people want to play. Professionals want to win.

Munsty, do you think part of this is that pro teams are so fit and so well-drilled in defence (bar the occasional Edinburgh) that just means there is less space now for creative players to express themselves at the top level of the game?

How is everyone?
My son played his first real game of rugby today for U9 B, it was amazing.

Now that is just asking for trouble so early in the evening.
Well he surprised me two weeks ago by saying he wants to play rugby, so he went to the trialls and got selected.
He plays hooker, so yes it seems he is a front row man like me. Overall it looked very promising.

Madness, how Ferris is not on the list is beyond me. 3 massive performances and 1 ok one.
Ryan has only started one game. O'Connell would be a better call.
The biggest omission of the lot is Rob Kearney.
Agree with the omission of Chilli...and where's Ireland's top try scorer this year?

That's a good point and something I've raised in the past with the amount of substitutions.

Gots to get 'em in early tonight bud, got family over from Germany so I've got to go meet the Focke's .
It's great watching your kids play the game, especially if you spot something in them, I bet you had a heart as big as a cabbage.
So you're honestly telling me YOU didn't make the suggestion then?

Evening all.
Biltong, here the U9 scrum is like in 7s but without the pushing. Just the front row. Is it the same over there?
And on the subject of kids in sport, spent the afternoon cheering on the girls hockey team from the kids school in their cup final. Some of these girls were at Primary school with our wee fella and most of the rest of the team I know from Athletics.
This is the first time they have been old enough to play in a Cup in schools hockey. They have played together for three seasons and have never lost a match.
Till today.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
I am innocent. I took him to cubs rugby when he turned six, but he had, well still has a skin disorder that is almost similar to athletes foot, and his feet just burst open, so it is very painful when you step on a blade of grass.
Anyway he had a few kids step on his feet and then said he didn't want to play.
So obviously being very disappointed I left it alone, and though maybe hwen he gets to the age where they start playing real rugby his mates will drag him along.
So last year we got him to play cricket which he actually really enjoys, until out of the blue he came and said he wants to play rugby.
And needles to say, when my kid plays a man's sport, not that cricket isn't, it is great.

good evening Teach.
The law for them is once the ball is in, can they push, but there isn't a "hit" when they bind. It is a full 8 man scrum though.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
For U9!!!!!?
Wow! That's totally different from here.
Our kids have a 5 man scrum till U12s and then they move to the full 15 a side game with an 8 man scrum but no hit.
So your U9s are playing 15 a side?
Does that not descend into 30 kids all running around after the ball, so close together you could throw a blanket over all of them?

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Teach, you will not believe how organised these young boys are.
Full scrum, full line out, you should see these boys rucking, they are being taught to stand over the ruck and get the ball, they do mauls from the line out, they tap and run when they get penalties, drop kick or place kick for convertions etc.
It is full on 15 man rugby, the only two laws I have seen that is different to real professional rugby is they don't kick outside their 22, in fact they never really kick apart from kick offs, and the scrum there is no hit.
Their match is 40 minutes long, 20 minutes to half time.
The score today 27 - 20
9 tries in total, sadly my sons team lost , being outscored 5 tries to 4.

Bad times for the little fellas feet then , sounds like he has some stones though if he's giving it another lash.
I often find it's best to leave them to make their own minds up, as long as they do what I want them to.
I can't believe it really biltong a mod and entirely innocent .

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub
Up until ours are 11 there is no kicking at all then it is only allowed in the zone 5m from their our try line.
Tries score 1 with no conversions till U12s.
The younger kids would have a 2 or 4 man line out but the ball always goes to the lad at the front!

Who are you and what have you done to biltong ?
I am from another planet, and I plan to take over world rugby with my offspring.

These boys learn to throw deep or in front. My son didn't miss his locks once today.

MrsP. after my rollicking the other day, you reminded me of my school days, although many years ago, it is still fresh in my memories, and the last person to reprimand me in such a stern manner was my teachers.
Hence as of now you will be dubbed. Teach.

Parents are wonderful.
Head back on straight, busy applying for jobs in the Bath/Bristol area, even a few in London Also have the fall back plan if I am not successful with anything by May-ish, can just move home*, keep applying and do some local volunteering etc to get more experience, and perhaps finally get round to passing my driving test.
Thanks again for everyone's advice earlier, it really did help
(*subject to having to weed the whole garden and be in charge of all the cooking and cleaning. No fair!)

And aye, I feel better now I've got a bit of a plan. Don't really like it when I feel clueless.

Lovely stuff Biltong man. I remember getting out every Sat morn with my youngest lad. All weather and with a hangover most times. He played for an Ajax feeder-club. Fudball. Was handy. Then, like his aulfella, found wimmin, booze and what his willy was really for...
Loved it. Da and Son time. Precious time. Enjoy every second mo chara.
