The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Pyongyang
First topic message reminder :
Hello and welcome to the Virtual Rugby Pub, a place where you can come in for a sly beverage and discuss whatever's on your mind, or just eavesdrop on the regulars if you fancy a break from all the rugby chat.
The pub has made its way to Pyongyang in a bid to persuade Kim Jong Un to pack away the missiles, grab a beer and watch the rugby.
The only rule in this pub is one of mutual respect for everyone in it, oh and no tampering with the pictures of Donal Walsh, Chris & the late Hannah Eaton, the retiring Marcus Horan, the recently hospitalised Schalk Burger (with meningitis), the recuperated Jacques Burger, and the three-peating ANBL champion NZ Breakers

I don't agree. I think these two were not automatons, they had a rational albeit one that is outside what any of us would like to think of as reasonable, acceptable or even understandable. Be clear though, these people are bad not mad.

I just think the more publicity / alarmism is generated by this, the happier the perpetrators will be. It was horrific, truly horrific, no question; but horrific murders aren't rare.

But that is kinda what makes this an act of terrorism. The aim would seem to be to induce fear and make a political point rather than actually having anything to do with this particular young victim.
Is that not what terrorism is?
I very much doubt any terrorist's plan is to kill the enemy one at a time, it is to make a point and induce fear.

It's certainly worked. I still think politicians / the media should be doing all they can to downplay this, or they're just fuelling the panic and fear the perpetrators are seeking.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Pyongyang
I think the difference between the scumbag perpetrators of yesterday and scumbags like Cregan, is that nobody went out to actively recruit Cregan and lead him down the path that culminated in the murder of the two police officers.
Nor did anyone suggest that he would somehow end up in paradise as a result of what he did.
Let's face it, true islamists dont want them here, the rest of us dont want them here, so why are they still here? Because "we can't just kick them out". That's the attitude that has to be adressed and has to addressed quickly before many more people feel they have no other option than to resort to direct action against innocent Muslims or more likely, and worse in the long run, lend their support through the ballot box to the far right political parties that will be perversely rubbing their hands right now.
These radical elements within the faith of Islam have to be cracked down upon right now and the best way of achieving that will be to involve true Muslims in their eradication. I'm fairly confident, that right now, they'll only be too happy to help.
Unfortunately, I predict much hand-wringing, apologistic fence-sitting from the politicians, and for what's left of society to fracture even further apart and bring us ever closer to confirming the foaming-mouth Enoch Powell as some sort of savant.

I feel your pain PJ. If anyone here feels it, I do. I lived through this nonsense on my streets.
But, where do we kick them out too?

TERRORISM - Although there is no generally agreed definition of terrorism internationally, in the UK the Terrorism Act 2000 defines terrorism as:
The use or threat of action designed to influence the government or an international governmental organisation or to intimidate the public, or a section of the public; made for the purposes of advancing a political, religious, racial or ideological cause; and it involves or causes:
serious violence against a person;
serious damage to a property;
a threat to a person's life;
a serious risk to the health and safety of the public; or
serious interference with or disruption to an electronic system.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Pyongyang
I know you do MrsP.
It has to be conducted across a broad and united front so that the message is absolutely clear. They need to be kicked out of Islam, out of society and where they are not UK citizens, out of the country.
Is there an Islamist equivalent to excommunication? If so, use it, if not, create one. Radical preaching of hate-faith and bigotry needs to be further and comprehensively criminalised. That way we can sweep the far-right scumbags into the same bin. Finally, the Human Rights Act has to be repealed, or whatever needs to be done, so that we can act unilaterally in launching the scumbags back from whence they came.
We never had a totalitarian government prior to the act anyway, so the only people it serves are those who couldn't give a flying feck about anybody else's rights but their own.

By that definition, it was terrorism, unquestionably.
That said, I'm not sure how the threat of action can be described as terrorism. That's far too broad.

That's the whole point of Terrorism. Making everyone afraid. Making every soldier afraid to wear his uniform in public. Making every member of the public afraid to support our armed forces.
One bloke with a bomb in his shoe and everyone has to take off their shoes at every airport in the world.
That is what terrorists want! They can't kill every enemy but they can make them all afraid.

I know that but surely somebody made the point it wasn't an act of terrorism. If they didn't make a convincing case the debate wouldn't be interesting.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Pyongyang
We shouldn't be helping them spread that fear, MrsP. The media are helping them. Our politicians are helping them.

Stag, it was a Colonel (or former Colonel) who was asking whether it qualified as terrorism. It was on the BBC website but they've moved it.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Pyongyang
Found it:
Col Mike Dewar, security and defence analyst
'Everyone says it's a terrorist attack but personally I think it depends on what your definition of terror is. These two appeared to be two individuals, deluded, with extremist ideas, Islamist or not.
'The main point is it's most unlikely to be a terrorist incident: the formula for that is that it needs to be done by a recognised organisation, the maximum number of people need to be killed and then the terrorists need to escape, to possibly kill other people.
'The man killed might have been a soldier or he was certainly sympathetic to soldiers, making him an obvious target. But then the men discussed their reasoning with bystanders: this is nutter territory.
'Too early to tell if it's more than deluded individuals. They may have been groomed but it doesn't make them terrorists. Just heinous murder.'

Cheers Lucky. Seems a strange way to consider it though for my book.
Can you imagine that was a Western guy who went out to Middle East and killed a soldier from one of the Muslim nations. He wouldn't have made it to the hospital.

I agree that it probably would have been better if the video had not been aired.
But a free press is something we value so it would be counterintuative to prevent the press from showing it.

That's true, MrsP. A big story is a big story. But we could have focussed more on the criminal aspect of it. We had a choice in how to portray the incident.

Absolutely, Notch (except slightly less so under the concept of personality disorders), and the huge majority of those with mental illness are absolutely harmless and would never hurt a fly. I haven't seen enough to know what is going on in this case but just as I should have made it seem like I was assuming they were mentally unwell, which was a mistake on my part, we should also not make the assumption that they are mentally sound. What they did was absolutely wrong but exactly what led them to do it is unclear as of yet

Evening pub. Shocking events yesterday and it brought back memories from many years back.
My dad worked at the RA barracks and had riden through the barrack gates on his moped after finishing work. He was 80 yards down the road when the bomb went off in the pub opposite the gates and narrowly missed being killed.
Condolences to the victims family and sympathy for the other two guys who were hurt.

Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Pyongyang
Hi Everyone
Haven't been in a wee while.
I was very saddened to read about what happened in London. Just awful. I'm rather cross though, at the way it was portrayed on the news. Was it absolutely necessary for every news channel to show the footage of the attackers after they'd murdered their victim - along with the body in the background? Not all channels blurred the nasty bits either (which was quite pointless given you could easily see what was what). Why do we give these people a platform to air their warped views? I wish the media would just tell the events from the point of view that a murder has been committed and leave it at that. Those two guys have got exactly what they wanted. I don't buy the fact that they are completely insane either. Also, shame on the bystanders who stood there and filmed everything. Why not go and help the victim and create a human wall around the body to preserve his dignity? Or just run like mad if you felt under threat? I think that says a lot about social networking has influenced our lives. Apparently there were a couple of videos doing the rounds just after the event. Anyway, that's enough of that. There's probably something in the off topic section about it I should go on...
Looking forward to a long weekend which should include a cracking P-12 final. I had a lovely weekend last week though in Somerset with Kiarose and got to see the Heino Final on a proper telly!

Hi Cari - great that you got to have a mini meet up. I was talking to a friend of yours very recently actually
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Pyongyang
Hey Staggy - long time no chat. Yes it was nice, but actually the rugby was secondary in the end. I didn't see the Amlin final - well, Leinster's second try. Then I gave up as I feared a one-sided game. I think I saw more Eurovision than rugby!

Limericks grand - boring as heck 99% of the time. Still in the same Stag Pad is right. Done with studying and making my way in the working world.
Re: The Dew Drop Inn Virtual Rugby Pub, Pyongyang
Ah congratulations on completing the studies. What did you get out of it? I can't believe Munsty's nearly finished his degree by now too. I remember when he was starting uni.

Exactly.
"Deluded" how the heck can he say that! Their actions in the aftermath were so contrary to the norm that they showed a huge resolve and a pre planned pre determined action no 'nutter' could pull off!

Fair dos. Something tells me it's not a significant step, or else Roger would be trumpeting about it. He doesn't normally need much of an excuse.
